On various occasions, staff members have posted to the effect that calling someone a liar (or similar use of nouns, adjectives and adverbs, etc stemming from the verb “to lie”) is not allowed.

The reason for this is given in the part of the original rule that I highlight in bold below

Trolling other forum members, grudge matches, soap-opera dramas, and other actions that staff members deem to be designed to disrupt threads or provoke hostile emotional responses from other forum members will not be tolerated.
In particular it is prohibited to call someone a liar, or to say that a statement a lie, or accuse a poster of lying. If you suspect someone of lying, you should report the post and show beyond all reasonable doubt that something that is not in accordance with reality was stated with the specific intention of deceiving the reader and if believed, would be to the advantage of the writer or their cause and was done at a time when the writer positively knew that what they wrote was not a representation of reality.
You will note the added information in maroon. It is to be interpreted generously, i.e. there is no way round it. It is there to add clarity to the paragraph above it, It is not therefore a new rule.

Calling someone a liar or saying that a statement is a lie is “fighting talk”, it does not need to be written on the open boards.

As above, and to make it clear,

If you suspect someone of lying, you should report the post in the usual way and show beyond all reasonable doubt that the main condition ((i) below) is the case and that all the subsequent conditions (a through c ) have been met.
(i)   something that is not in accordance with reality was stated with
a.   the specific intention of deceiving the reader and,
b.   if believed, would be to the advantage of the writer or their cause and
c.   was done at a time when the writer positively knew that what they wrote was not a representation of reality.

Lying to WWGHA and its members will be treated in the same way as intentional trolling.

It has been helpfully pointed out that the report function allows only a short sentence or so. I suggest  the initial report will simply be "Lying: PM follows" (or similar) and a PM will have to be sent.

Any Moderator will do.

I would suggest that each of the points in the above post be addressed in turn: let’s say as a few sentences and links where necessary but as long as the case is made out, nobody will mind.
