Title: Enough to make you believe in SOME sort of God
Post by: Fiji on October 11, 2013, 05:30:51 PM
We kicked ourselves some Croat ass! So, for the first time since ... before my kids were born ... Belgium is heading to the world cup!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd9mxnvHeCM

Actually, given that Croatia is far more religious than Belgium and that, thus, far more people must have prayed for them then for us ... does this prove that there is no god? ;)

So, already qualified:
Brazil
Argentina
Iran
South Korea
Japan
Australia
USA
Costa Rica
BELGIUM!!!
Italy
Germany
Netherlands
Switserland

And two countries I quite like are still in with a chance ... Iceland and Armenia

Though Armenia will need help from several gods ... Bulgaria and the Czech republic must draw, Denmark can't win against Malta and Armenia needs to beat Italy.

England, Portugal and France still have quite some work ahead of them ... can you imagine a world cup with all three of them missing?!

Better get your rooting in early.

CAF still had to do its final round of qualifying, hence no African countries yet. In fact, only AFC had completed its qualifying ... And even there, Lebanon, iirc, still gets to play the number 5 Conmebol country.

I think it's safe to say that Ecuador and Chile are also qualified (unless Uruguay manages to beat Argentina 8-0 or something)
Honduras too is qualified.

So, that's 16 qualified with 5 CAF countries still to come, 2 intercontinental (New Zealand vs Mexico and Jordan vs Uruguay) and 9 from UEFA

*hums, "going to Brasil"*

Well, the Vatican team isn't even recognized by FIFA.  I have a feeling that an all-powerful god would be upset about that.  Imagine all the FIFA execs in Hell:

"But I was a good Christian!  I prayed to you!"
"But you never had tournaments with the Vatican.  You have shamed the LORD!  The LORD will now smite you!" *push*

Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have a book deal.

Regardsless, most FIFA execs should go to several hells anyway ... ;)

Portugal - Sweden
Ukraine - France
Rumania - Greece
Croatia - ICELAND

Oh man, I'm SO hoping both Scandinavian teams make it.
Hey, All Iceland has to do is beat Croatia ... and we beat them, so how hard can it be? ;)

Playing in the World Cup in a Qatari summer will be a close approximation for the teams if not the officials.

Reminds me of Klinsman at the US-ian world cup. When asked about the heat in Florida, he replied that when you ran, you got "ein herliche laufwind" ... a delightful run-breeze. You're going to have to run pretty damn hard to get ein herliche laufwind in the Qatari summer ;)

They've got indoor snowboarding in the Middle East, I'm certain they can find a way to combat the heat in this day and age.

Uruguay 5 Jordan 0. And that was in Jordan...

Makes you wonder if it wouldn't make more sense for the Jordanian Football Federation to save money and not bother sending the aquad to Uruguay to get beaten even worse.

Still confident in your 2-1 prediction for the game which has just started?

The kiwis do seem to be getting overrun ... and they're 'only' three goals down thanks to a couple of unlikely saves by their keeper. This New Zealand side is quite a bit less capable than the 2010 one.

Come on Mexico...one more goal!! I want my waffles!!

Final score Mexico 5 -  New Zealand 1.

But I'm a reasonable person. I'll waive the waffles if you wear a Holland Jersey to work on the eve of the World Cup.

Our resident Dutchman was in his I-Don't-Care-About-Football mode today ... which he gets into whenever something bad happens to Oranje ... like, losing a group leader spot to Uruguay

In hindsight, I'm actually glad the kiwis got their backsides whipped. Their tactical plan seemed to be: run forward, take dive ... which I massively hate. Referee was on to them though.
Though he might have given them yellow cards for such ... to me it's evident that, if tackling someone in the box is at least a yellow card and often a red one ... then taking a dive in the box should also, often result in a sending off. FIFA actually pushed that in '94[1] ... bur forgot all about it immediatly after the world cup. Wankers.
 1. Much to the chagrin of the aforementioned Uruguay, who, in their first game were down to 9 by half time ... what? Getting one guy sent off didn't get the message across?

FRANCE of all countries, is closest to getting eliminated! Still, they're still in with a chance.
Today, I'll be rooting for Senegal and Ethiopia.

Ah well Fiji, in the end the cream rose to the top in Europe, my dreams of Iceland, Sweden and Ukraine causing an upset are over. It does make for a quality finals series next year.

Good to see Australia have a win over fellow finalists Costa Rica, although CR were not at full strength.

I shudder to think how many goals Uruguay are going to put past Jordan tonight. it will surely be at least 5 again. I predict Mexico will still beat New Zealand in Wellington, but probably by only 1 or 2 goals. I'll call it 2-1 Mexico.

I had the same dreams.
Iceland ... they came up quite short in the end ... sad but true.
Sweden ... both Sweden and Portugal are one-man-shows. In the end luck, more than anything decided this one.
Ukraine was robbed ... an offside goal decided that one. Over the two games, I wouldn't rate France higher than the Ukraine.

I'm not even going to bother with Uruguay tonight. Your sheep-loving neighbours meanwhile, only lost 2-4 ... Mexico took the foot off the gas after half an hour.

Yeah...'only' conceded 4 goals in front of a parochial crowd. Still...they can always say they were the only undefeated nation at the 2010 world cup.

Oh dear, here come the kooks

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlVdfrIHfiA

Trough the grapevine, I heared that an Argentine journalist was told what Argentina's group would be, two days before the draw.
To which I say "bullshit". A journalist who has a bombshell like that ... and DOESN'T publish it? Yeah right.

And all of this, allegedly, to set up a Brasil - Argentina final.

That said, the draw WAS a bit of a farce. I mean, they did a trial draw and no one went, "hang on, this is going to feed to kooks".
They should have had a couple of professional stage magicians in the trial audience.

Make it Alyson Hannigan[1] and her staring in a spinoff along with James Marsters and her husband and we have a deal.

 1. Yes, even today, after two kids.

Okay nerdboys, you made me look up those women. Otherwise, I wouldn't know them if they stood up in me soup. One look at the Cristina person= they're fake. The other lady= meh. But whatever. I guess that means I am not gay. Or even very bi.

Thor naked, in or out of the soup. Cowabunga! Now you're talking some sort of god!  ;D

And Christina's aren't fake, I think she has highly engineered undergarments that make you think that. It you see her without said undergarments...well, gravity, and a fairly sizable tummy. Still very sexy, in some ways moreso, but...gravity belies her not being an artificial construct.
