Title: Where did you get your username from?
Post by: One Above All on May 23, 2013, 04:39:06 PM
I'll start with the three usernames I've had here:
Blaziken - my favorite Pokémon
Lucifer - my favorite character in the Bible (the fake one theists believe in; not the actual Bible that only mentions "Lucifer" as a title for a Babylonian[1] king, an angel[2] and Jesus)
One Above All - the Marvel supreme deity

And here's another one I've added to my list of "Also known as:" in my sig:
All In One - one of the Vortigauns'[3] deities[4].
 1. IIRC.
 2. Who didn't rebel.
 3. From Half-Life.
 4. I say "one of" because I'm not sure if they have others.

My sons name is Miles. The magic just seemed like a good prefix back when I first created an internet name in about 2007.

It's sort of a joke - it's short for "just a girl" and it was first introduced on a sports forum as a social experiment. I wondered if I would be treated differently with a neutral name versus a gender-obvious name. My other name on that board was Tiffany, and yes, it made a difference. Jag stuck when some of us migrated elsewhere and I've been Jag ever since.

I got woo-ed into using this name.  ;)

Back in 1999, I was asked about some sigils I had embroidered on some black velvet robes for a masquerade at a SF/fantasy convention.  The question was "Are those real runes?"

I didn't know, so I started researching runes.  That led Me to Odin and to the rest of the Norse pantheon.

I was also into crystals, er, shiny geologically-created piezoelectric thingamajigs, and for a while was carrying a nice round piece of quartz in My pocket.  One day, while having a coffee break at My IT job, I was holding this rock and meditating.  In My imagination, I heard Odin call Me 'Astreja.'  After a little more digging around I realized that the goddess variously known as Eostre, Ostara, Astarte, et al. was MIA... So I volunteered.

And I *so* wish I was making this up...

(BTW, I still have the black velvet robes that started  this whole thing.  I tend to put them on October 31 and grumble a lot in a sarcastic whisper, pausing occasionally to cough, wheeze or mutter the words of a Fireball spell.)

My user name when I was a christian (on other boards) was Monster Machine. But when I lost my faith and the blinders came off, I felt such a zest for life that I changed my name to Energized. I was no longer living to die... I was living to live and I feel so energized to live it and experience it to its fullest.

Energized also has the same first letter as my real name, Eldon. I always end my emails with E. so why not E. for Energized?

E.

Post by: Schizoid on May 23, 2013, 08:20:31 PM
"Schizoid" is my personality which is considered a disorder, but not by me--it's simply who I am.  I am schizoid because I prefer my own company to that of others ("I vant to be alone, darling").  I am alone but not lonely.  Definitely not a people person so I don't have friends because they are people and other than for short periods I find people to be annoying.

Probably surprising to many I am NOT introverted.  I can talk to total strangers while waiting in a store line, even initiating an exchange by commenting on our wait.  But since it is only for a minute or two and I don't have to ever see them again it is easy for me to do.

Imagine how distressed I would be to find myself have to spend eternity after death with people I would want to have nothing to do with in life, worshiping a deity that I consider to be a psychopath.  Now that really would be hell for me.

So choosing "Schizoid" as my username is actually quite descriptive of me as a person.

Not quite, the last three letters of my name translates to king, Samraat has seven letters! Can't blame you, we have quite a lot of synonyms for king in India. That is one of the nuances of having too many languages in one country. (We have 22 official languages!)

In my experience 'absolutism' leads to inconsistencies and paradoxes.

On an atheist site I thought it appropriately reflected my views.

I have loads of word documents on my PC where I expound my theories using (in no particular order) Einstein, Godel, Chomsky, Heisenberg, Hume etc.

After all these years I still have not had the bravery to start the 'ultimate' thread/post to show my 'wisdom'.

Maybe I am being too perfectionist!!!   :)

my wife always has referred to any non believer as a "pagan" so when I officially dumped xianity months ago it only made sense... I am a new pagan.

I know the name implies some form of religion and as an atheist that sounds odd.  I am still in the closet so it makes sense for me since I still go to church with my family.

When I was about 14 I took big interest in Japanese history, particularly feudal Japan and at the same time I took an interest in game creation[1], went through a process of learning how to program and 3D model and also created my own website (http://seppukuarts.wordpress.com/), I struggled to think of names and came across a few interesting Japanese words and eventually settled on 'seppuku', which is a form of ritual suicide which involves disembowelment followed by a person of your own choice beheading you. Seppuku is a ritual reserved for any samurai who have become dishonoured. So my website become Seppuku Arts, which I guess is a little grim, but I like grim. It's perhaps obvious my interest hasn't died consider my avatar is a depiction of Miyamoto Musashi (legendary samurai and author of the Book of 5 Rings) and my signature steals a quote from him.

This name is a shortened version of the name I use on just about every website that requires a username.  When I went to sign up here it said that the name I usually use was already taken, so I shortened it to what I have now.  But even if I could use the name I wanted, there is no special meaning behind it.  Just a word and a random number.

Mine is the Spanish phonetic pronunciation of my name.  When I lived in Mexico, on several occasions, people wrote my name as Quesi or the affectionate diminutive of Quesita, which is what folks usually called me.

Accent on the first syllable for Quesi.  Second syllable for Quesita.

Oddly, in the gaming world, folks often misspelled Quesita as Questia, and during my pre-mommy days in which I would do live chat in games, guildmates often mispronounced my name as Quest-ee-a.

We see the world through our own set of filters.

My wife isn't a dwarf  :) but she complains about her small hands all the time - she has her ARCT in piano but found that at music festivals she couldn't play the more glamorous selections that adjudicators favored because she can't reach more than an octave.  We often debate the following: considering the gargantuan hands that some basketball players have, would professional basketball players have an advantage at playing the piano or would their hands be too big to effectively play the smaller intervals?

My name is a combination of the colors of my two favorite football teams - the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the U of S Huskies.  I am just wondering how far I should run with this pattern - if I should decide to choose a favorite NFL team are my choices limited to the Eagles and the Jets; if I decide to cheer for an NBA team must I cheer for the Celtics; and where does this pattern leave me with respect to beer selections?

There are very few independently owned breweries, most have been swallowed by corporate heavies.

There are some good microbreweries in Quebec and BC, but Saskatchewan is kind of a barren wasteland when it comes to finding good beer.  It is much more productive to travel to Alberta or Manitoba as the selection is much better.  The best liquor store I have ever been to is the Zyn wine shop in Calgary.  They must have between three and four hundred different types of beer arranged categorically by country or region (e.g. England, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, etc...).  A true paradise - good thing I don't live in Calgary.

Who didn't love "The Jetsons" growing up?

My wife and I used to actively collect metal lunch boxes.  Believe it or not, there is a finite set of them (about 450 unique ones documented).  In 1985, a judge in Florida ruled the metal lunch box a weapon, after a case where a child hit another child with his metal lunch box.  The last one manufactured was Rambo.

It turns out that there are some lunch boxes that are rare, and thus the price goes up.  The Jetsons dome metal lunch box was one of those rare ones, and difficult to find.  We ended up getting it off of Ebay, and we paid a high price.  We still have our collection, but we've decided to sell the ones we enjoy the least.  We had them displayed in out Kitchen all the way around on a shelf near the ceiling.

It made for some fun conversations when people visited us.  Everyone seemed to have a story about their favorite metal lunch box.

While my nick[1] is not in any religious text, unless you want to count the gospel according to Cat, and even there it's called Fuchal, there is a biblical link to it ... sort of.

Fourth year of middle school. English/Dutch/History/Religion teacher had one of those nine month afflictions and was coming up on the tail end of it. So we got two substitutes (one for English/Dutch, the other for History/Religion). And, of course, being the bunch of assholes one tends to be at that age. We decided to do the utterly overused trick of chaning names. Out comes the bible[2]. But, our knowledge of the damn thing being about as detailed as one can expect from Belgian teens in the late eighties we couldn't find enough different names! What other book contains peculiar names and is easily available to schoolchildren? The Atlas of course (hey, at least were sticking to the religion theme ... right?)
Et voila ... Fiji.
The name stuck as it is fairly similar to my real name (which, at the time, I hated and am still not too jazzed about). I'm registered under that name in many a forum.
 1. what? yes, I do remember #IRC, why do you ask?
 2. yes, this was a Catholic school

Mine comes from a little segment in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, in which it is explained that some 98% (or similar, don't remember exactly) of known galactic civilizations have a drink called Gin and Tonics (such as Chinianto-mnigs/djin-anthony-ks/Jinnan tonnyx, etc) ranging from ordinary tap water served at slightly above room temperature to something that kills cows at 20 paces. (spellings/quote also probably slightly off as I'm going from memory and haven't actually seen the book in many years. It's one of those things I find I can never lend out, as people tend to keep it forever and I've had to replace it too many times already)

Anyway, I always got a kick out of it, and it was the name on the first email account I ever created, and pretty much my default screen/username for various sites since. I had to originally change the spelling as there was already an email in use with the original spelling from the book.

Your welcome Dump.  that's funny. I think I'll nickname you Fire!

The only message boards I'd participated in prior to joining WWGHA were sports related, and I habitually used the same screen name. It works well on the sports boards as a reference to something that is just uncontrollably awful[1], but in retrospect it might have been wiser to choose something a little less goofy for this site. But I suppose its good for some LULz, and I'm not someone who digs being serious all the time, so I guess I'll hang on to it. Feel free to call me whatever variation of it you wish, although "Fire" is probably the most flattering of them :), and "Dump" the least[2].
 1. example: "When we won our first 3 games I thought we were Super Bowl contenders, but then Johnson blew out his knee, we lost 5 in a row, and the season turned into a total dumpster fire."
 2. DF is also an acceptable alternative

There was also a guest star on an episode of "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" who was a dwarf... about four foot one or so, if memory serves.  When I looked her up on IMDb, it turned out that she was also a piano player.  There was another dwarf who played the piano as well that I read about.

All of this basically lets the air out of my story idea.  It probably wasn't a very good idea in the first place.  Others pointed out flaws with it as well that I hadn't even thought about.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to deflate the idea.  Still has potential - especially from a dark angle!

If a perfect story were possible, it would be the best story ever written. All stories have plot holes. Sometimes minor, other major, but they exist everywhere.
If you want, I could volunteer as a beta reader for your story, and maybe even give you ideas.

My user name stems from this, my first name is Albert, everybody calls me Bert, apart from my wife who calls me Albie. I do everything from my home so, hence Bert at Bert's I was going to put "house" at the end, but it seemed to long.  Sad aren't I.

Until seeing this, I had never even registered the extra "t" in the middle, and had always read it as Bertaberts.

Isn't that strange, I wondered why people did that. I thought they were just being humorous. Well it seems you are in very good company, in your error.

I also didn't notice the "t", until I was replying to another user about one of bertatberts's posts and decided to copy/paste his name, just to be on the safe side.
