Title: There must be a god.
Post by: jetson on July 05, 2012, 07:57:45 PM
I am back online with AT&T U-Verse Internet (18 mbps).  It's the fastest home internet I have ever had, and it makes me think there must be a god!  Anyway, my life demands internet access, and I prefer that, over TV subscriptions, personally.  It does have a download cap each month, so easy on the reported threads!  LOL

Anyway, anyone out there have super-duper high speed access from home?  Data Caps?  T1 lines?

I'm with Suddenlink. 16mbps. It was unlimited up until a month ago when they announced data caps. Now I'm charged $10 for every 50GBs I go over.

Cool!  Here's mine.

Edit: Grant, you got a better score than me because of your location!  Interesting.

Must be nice.  I'm on bootleg wi-fi, which has the advantage of not costing anything.

Wow, my speed really sucks.

What I really want is Fios Quantum. For the top of the line service it's something like 300mb down.

If only I have 200 bucks to spend a month.

I'm at work right now, so can't post an actual graphic, but I have Verizon FiOS that's advertised as being 15/5 but actually gives me 20/5.  Not too shabby.  Prior to that, I had a 3Mbps DSL connection.  Significantly slower, obviously, but still adequate for the most part.  The only time I ever noticed any problems per se was when I was doing something like streaming Netflix and playing WoW at the same time.  Even so, of course, the extra speed is still nice to have.

I need to do some research on ATT data caps, and how to keep an eye on it!  This is addicting!

What do you mean by data cap? Do they stop your service or just slow it down?

You should be able to keep an eye on it by just logging onto your account through your ISP's website. They've got to have something set up for ya.

With my ISP a data cap is just a certain amount of data you're allowed before they start charging you extra. I think my allowance is 250GB before I start racking up additional charges.

Good question, jetson -

I have a basic cable connection, and as far as I know, there are no data caps; we're paying about $65 a month.

It's funny, just ten minutes before reading this thread, I was raving to my wife about how awesome the internet service is.

Of course, it's going to vary for everyone from second to second - this second image is from about 5 minutes later than the first.

I have a Comcast cable modem.

(http://www.speedtest.net/result/2049453354.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)

I don't know of any data caps.

Edit to add: We pay around $50. My work pays for mine though, I would call and upgrade but I was told we need a better router before we see better results.

I will look into it, but the install guy told me I could get shut off.  Sounds odd now that I think about it.

Yeah. And to make you feel worse, Virgin are in the process of installing fibre-optic cables in London, and the rate's soon going to double. Free upgrade, too.

This is actually the slowest FiOS connection available at my house -- I haven't gone to anything faster because the way I use the Internet right now doesn't require any higher speeds.  (Eventually, of course, things will change to the point where I will feel the need for more speed, but that's a ways off yet.)  Currently, Verizon offers speeds up to 50 Mbps down at my home.

Virgin Media. Same as me. I'm about 35-40 miles from the server. I wonder if fibre optic would be quicker.

No. Just ordinary cable. I've been thinking about it for a while but I wonder if the increase speed is great enough to justify the extra cost. I wonder how fast it has to be to get grade "A" or "A+"

NEVER get TalkTalk broadband. It's so intermittent, I've been on this speed for about 14 hours now. Trying to download massive amounts of sound samples for my music composition programs, and it's abysmal. Lucky me, I was actually getting 3 times this yesterday...

Although on the plus side, I have downloaded about 61GB of data in the last week and a half. Logic Pro samples, 30GB, Sibelius 7 samples, 28GB, Windows 7, isos, 3GB.... We get uncapped internet, but it's so damn slow it's barely worth it.

Mr Blackwell, I may presume that you have a 1990's-era 56K dialup connection from those statistics.

My speed varies regularly, depending on how many people are connected to our network. I'll see if I can snapshot it at midnight tonight, I've seen it go up to well over 100Mb/s on a good day...

I'm using Wireless too. I plugged in the ethernet the other day and got the full whack, but saying that I'm one of the first people in my town to get infinity and my house is about 40 feet away from the cabinet, hence the speed.
