Title: Youtube round-up...
Post by: JustAGuy on September 05, 2008, 10:27:27 AM
Who are your most and least favorite religious commentators on youtube?

Most Favorite
1) A few who will remain anonymous because I don't think they'd like the attention
2) PatCondell (though I do not agree with some of his opinions outside of religion)
3) Cristofer7 (though I do not agree with some of his opinions outside of religion)
4) EdwardCurrent
5) Theoretical Bulls**t (I've only watched one video, but it was very good)

Least Favorite
1) revivalisneeded (pretty sure he is the street preacher in some of his videos -- total asshole)
2) YokeUp (this requires no explanation)
3) Naomi94 (atheist who deleted a harmless comment for no reason)
(I don't watch enough of the idiots to have more than three that I know enough about to dislike)

I don't like any of them!

One's trying to prove the other wrong when there's truth, of different kinds, on both sides.

Science has the physical and literal truth. Religion has the meaningful truth, or at least some of it...

How are there different kinds of truth?  Something is true, or it's not.

Regarding TAA, I think he's good except when he talks with his brother because those videos are just typical youtube videos... ung! I fuck pussy and dootdeedootdeedoo I like pizza and Star Wars dootdeedootdeedoo.  He's got the right to do that, of course, but I feel like the dumb ones can be held up by Christians and allow them to say, "See. That's what this guy is about.  He's stupid, so don't even bother looking at his other videos."

I like most of his videos though... like "JESUS: The Super Zombie Myth".

Regarding TAA, I think he's good except when he talks with his brother because those videos are just typical youtube videos... ung! I f**k pussy and dootdeedootdeedoo I like pizza and Star Wars dootdeedootdeedoo.  He's got the right to do that, of course, but I feel like the dumb ones can be held up by Christians and allow them to say, "See. That's what this guy is about.  He's stupid, so don't even bother looking at his other videos."

I like most of his videos though... like "JESUS: The Super Zombie Myth".

He's had some classics.  I can't find the one where he shows how to deal with pesky fundamentalists.  It goes like this;

TAA: Is it wrong when God killed people?
Fund: "No, God can do what he likes!  He's GOD!"
TAA: So, it's not a sin if god does it?
Fund: "Nope!"
TAA: So, if Jesus wanted to have homosexual sex, that would mean homosexual sex would not be a sin for Jesus?
Fund: "WHAT?  Are you nuts?  God wouldn't want to do that!"
TAA: Then, why did god want to kill all those people and that's OK but homosexuality is not?
Fund: "You're a sick SOB ... I hope you burn in Hell!"

The reason why I bumped him down was that he did not act entirely ethically when talking with DonExodus2.  You can see the back-and-forth between them if you want to judge for yourself.  DE2 does seem to be clinging to Christianity for muddled reasons, but I see him as being honest and thoughtful and otherwise entirely reasonable, so can't ding him for that.   Corrections appreciated.

http://www.youtube.com/user/revivalisneeded (street preacher in his videos? an A$$.)

Wow.. maybe he's watching us.  He just posted a video that... you know... maybe not logically sane... but at least he keeps his cool and isn't running around with a megaphone yelling his head off: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XADBv4I2R-E

Compare that to this, which is about on par with Jesus Camp when it comes to how shocking the demeanor is... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6FOE_pI1LE

And then he tells some Mormon family that their dad is a demon and that the daughter should not wear jeans (never heard that one before???): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyK6COHZHVQ

TAA completely turns me off. cdk007 and DonExodus2 rock. AronRa is okay though his dialogue annoys me as it's a very rushed monotone. Mr. patcondell is always entertaining. potholer54 deserves an honourable mention. AndromedasWake is one to watch. Can't think of any others that really strike me at the moment.

Good:
Without question, Potholer54.  Sure, Thunderfoot wins by sheer volume, but video for video, Potholer's are more succinct and deal directly with explaning scientific information for the layperson.  He does deal with religion in disproving creationism.

Though he's loud, I like The Amazing Atheist.  Sure, he goes to far some times, but most of the time the rest of the world doesn't go far enough.  He makes some very good points, and is often very funny.

Also, KingHeathen and Agnosticman both give great philosophical arugments against religion.  They should, since like me they are both former fundies.

Bad:
Obviously VenomFangX, despite his recent "turn around" in light of the purjury scandal.  He blatantly has lied to people while professing Christian values.  Hypocrite.

Nephilumfree . . . really makes me think he enjoys molesting children.  I'm sure he doesn't . . . he just looks like he does.  Also acts so superior and arrogant.

Jezuzfreek: I'm not too confident putting him down here.  He pisses me off, because every last one of his arguments can be boiled down to "because the Bible says so".  He never gives a reason WHY we should believe in the Bible, besides saying "it's God's word", which he never says WHY we should think it is God's word.

On the plus side, he doesn't censor, and at least is consistent with his beliefs for the most part.  He sticks to his story, unlike Venom.  He isn't a hypocrite, he's just the epitome of a Bible thumper.

Then there is Yokeup.  Take the Bible thumping of JF, the slimy nature of Venom, and the creepyness of Nephilumfree, and you get Yokeup.  He's just awful, bigoted, and is the epitome of everything bad with Christianity.

Watched some of cdk007's videos.  He needs to stick to arguing against Creationists -- the bottom rung of society.

He has a rather cavalier attitude when it comes to analyzing more complicated issues, specifically politics.  Most people say stupid things when it comes to politics, but when you're a PhD, you are expected to have an elevated level of intellectual integrity if you want to be taken seriously.  Otherwise, you throw away all the hard work required in attaining the doctorate.

Most people overestimate their intellectual prowess, not even realizing that they do it.  If cdk007 were forced to debate someone who knows their politics to at least some degree, such as perhaps Chomsky, he would quickly find himself humiliated.

"Democrats want to put the government back into the hands of you, the people"... war has been severely opposed for several years now... Democratic Congress, elected by those who believed they'd end the war... still no end in sight.

"Democrats, like our founding fathers, believe in a balance of power"... How's impeachment coming along?  Oh, wait... Pelosi says it's off the table?  Oh, my!

Agreed.  If there was an illegal DMCA filed that caused him to get his account suspended, I hope that he has them put in jail for it.  Enough with this BS censorship.  If you can't stand what someone else says enough to allow them to say it, maybe you don't know what you're talking about?  Challenge them with your own words, and if you can't, that's not their fault!

The useless "insert Flash" button is right next to the "YouTube" button.  I've done it, but I usually catch it!  :)

The Onion is good ... sometimes I laugh for 5 minutes and retell the story to someone else weeks or months later.  They have a daily podcast that is short and can be quite good, though the longer printed stories usually are superior.

Yeah, cdk007's okay with statistics, too. I try to avoid most of the political stuff on YouTube, as I'm not convinced that my understanding of American politics would be improved greatly by watching the bits of it that have been filtered through the brains of the average American YouTube user.

CaptOrdinary is highly underrated. His debunking of Harun Yahia alone makes his channel worth while.

Going to have to jump in here and say that his lecture on infinity was wrong.  Infinity is tricky, though, and many of its subtleties can become very confusing.

Error #1
He says that God cannot be infinite if the universe is not part of him, but that is not at all true, and here is an easy analogy to understand:

If a set of numbers, x, includes every number greater than zero, then x is clearly an infinite set.
Equally clearly, -1 is not a part of x.

What is true, though, is saying infinity + 1 is not really possible, and the following is also true:
y = x +1
limit [x->oo] y = oo

and

limit [x->oo] x/y = 1

...which would appear to say that x = y... BUT!...

limit [x->oo] x-y
= limit [x->oo] x - (x + 1)
= limit [x->oo] x - x - 1
= limit [x->oo] - 1
= - 1

So while the statement is true in some respects, it is certainly not always true.  What is true, though, and what I believe he is attempting to communicate is that there is no number that is larger than infinity.  Also similar in concept is that you cannot add/subtract a finite number to infinity or multiply/divide infinity by a finite number and produce a finite number; it is still infinite.

Error #2
He says that there are no more milliseconds than seconds in an infinite amount of time, which is also untrue.

x = number of seconds in a specified time duration, t, which is in seconds
y = number of milliseconds in a specified time duration, t, which is in seconds

x = t / (1 second)
y = 1000 * x

With these assumptions, x - y, according to him, is 0, but it is not.  Similarly, x/y should be 1, but it is not.  In order to solve x-y or x/y, which are indeterminate forms, you must make use of L`Hopital's rule, which is often very easy to do:

indeterminate form oo - oo:
limit [t->oo] x - y
= limit [t->oo] x - (1000 * x)
= limit [t->oo] -999 * x
= -oo

indeterminate form oo / oo:
limit [t->oo] x / y
= limit [t->oo] x / (1000 * x)
= limit [t->oo] 1/1,000  * (x/x)
= 1/1,000

Is this boy claiming to be a Math PhD?  :-\  This is Calculus 2...  :(

Anyways, to correct the second analogy, the problem with it is that there is a formula that directly and indisputably converts seconds into milliseconds, and it is not at a 1:1 ratio.  A more accurate analogy that I suppose communicates the same idea is something such as, "There are more supernovas in an infinite amount of time than there are hairs on the heads of all humans."

uhm,

It's simply not possible to count the amount if real number values in a theoretical, hypothetical number. It's an equation without meaning. That's like asking someone to step away 100 meters from the ball of nothing which 'exploded' in the big bang before it bigbanged.
Title: Re: Youtube round-up...
Post by: JustAGuy on October 02, 2008, 08:42:51 PM
Seems to me you're sorta limiting the definition of infinity to the distance that light traveled since the big bang, which is a finite speed multiplied by a finite duration of time... producing a finite number... and it may be impossible for you to every catch up with it, and thus logically infinite for humans, but such a distance is not actually mathematically infinite.

When it comes to indeterminate forms, you are talking about "limits."  You are not actually setting a variable to infinity, but are instead noticing what happens to an equation when a variable travels toward a specific value, such as 0, 1, 5, etc. or infinity.

Here are explanations on how to solve indeterminate forms:

(http://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/Classes/CalcI/LHospitalsRule_files/eq0007M.gif) (http://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/Classes/CalcI/LHospitalsRule_files/eq0007M.gif)

http://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/Classes/CalcI/LHospitalsRule.aspx

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Indeterminate.html
http://mathworld.wolfram.com/LHospitalsRule.html (more complicated)

To correct an error, L`Hopital's Rule was not used in my previous examples since they are solvable with algebra and knowledge of limits, but it is a method often used to solve indeterminate forms.

By the way, after listening to the video again, I guess it depends on the context.  If you're talking about conceptual infinity, then you can't add a finite number to it, but if you're talking about how infinity is dealt with in mathematics, which is by limits, then you can sorta kinda in a round-about-way do it.

I definitely think the first analogy is incorrect within all contexts though.
Title: Re: Youtube round-up...
Post by: Gargaroth on October 03, 2008, 03:50:30 AM
You didn't get my point; The example of stepping back from the ball of nothing has nothing to do with the definition of infinity. My point was simply that when dealing with the conceptual infinity as used in the video (opposed to one certain mathematical definition), it wouldn't make sense to compare the number of times two real number values would fit in it. You will just end up just comparing the two real number values, as I believe is also the case in your example.

You would first have to limit the value of infinity for it to make sense. And using a yard stick measuring for example the space-time that has been called into existence by our great Lord FSM (The most Benificent, the most Merciful), Ruler of all that is Noodly (Praise be upon his Seraphic Dishes), is not the same as infinity by any definition.

2* infinity/2
        1 limit           =

((6(i/l)+4(n/l)+2(f/l)+2(t/l)+2(y/t))/2  +
((6(i/m)+4(n/m)+2(f/m)+2(n/m)+2(t/m)+2(y/m))/2 +
(6(i/t)+4(n/t)+2(f/t)+2(y/t))/2                     =

2Y+(4A/2)+2W+4(E/2)+2H
                    2                                                  =

2YAWEH
         2                                                             =

YAWEH

...omFg!!

I'm not saying that the statement "God is infinite" is not a stupid statement, but my point is that his first attempt to disprove this statement by saying, "Well, that can't be since the world is not a part of God." is wrong.

Just nipping a bad argument in the bud.

Ban him?  No.  Totally and completely humiliate him?  Yes.

Unfortunately, back in reality, looking at the video he actually made there's no contrition ... no sincerity in his apology.  It's completely deadpanned and unemotional.  He was threatened and followed the letter of the agreement and no more like an impoverished child getting caught stealing other kids' toys.

I do not doubt for a moment that he does not care about the DMCA nor the rights of the people he attempted to censor.  He would do it again in a microsecond if he couldn't get caught ... and I bet he is trying to figure out how to right now.  After all, why not?  He has no morals ... he's got Jesus!

The only lesson he learned is don't mess with Thunderf00t (http://www.youtube.com/user/Thunderf00t).  Everyone else is fair game.

May it be to the world, what I believe it will be, (to some parts sooner, to others later, but finally to all,) the signal of arousing men to burst the chains under which monkish ignorance and superstition had persuaded them to bind themselves, and to assume the blessings and security of self-government. All eyes are opened, or opening, to the rights of man. The general spread of the light of science has already laid open to every view the palpable truth, that the mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few booted and spurred, ready to ride them legitimately, by the grace of God.

New video on the God Is Imaginary / Why Won't God Heal Amputees YouTube channel;

Why does every intelligent Christian disobey Jesus?

Quote
In this short video, we will examine a simple but profound question. Why do you, as an intelligent Christian, disobey Jesus? Why don't you do what Jesus tells you to do in the Bible?

The Bible makes it very clear: To be a Christian, You must obey Jesus. For example, the bible says:

We know that we have come to
know [Jesus] if we obey his
commands. The man who says,
"I know him," but does not do
what he commands is a liar,
and the truth is not in him.
- 1 John 2: 3-4

Jesus also says:

That servant who knows his
master's will and does not get
ready or does not do what his
master wants will be beaten
with many blows.
- Luke 12: 47

The message is clear enough. To be a Christian, you must obey Jesus. So let's look at five things that Jesus has commanded you to do in the Bible. These commandments, and the fact that you ignore them, will amaze you...

Phil Zuckerman has written a couple books that go over the statistical data showing that godless societies tend to do very very well;

“Based on a careful assessment of the most recent survey data available, we find that somewhere between 500,000,000 and 750,000,000 humans currently do not believe in God. Such figures render any suggestion that theism is innate or neurologically based untenable… High levels of organic atheism are strongly correlated with high levels of societal health, such as low homicide rates, low poverty rates, low infant mortality rates, and low illiteracy rates, as well as high levels of educational attainment, per capita income, and gender equality. Most nations characterized by high degrees of individual and societal security have the highest rates of organic atheism, and conversely, nations characterized by low degrees of individual and societal security have the lowest rates of organic atheism.” — Phil Zuckerman

In his latest, he even investigated the country and interviewed the people of Denmark to see what makes them stand out as a highly successful society.
