This is your evidence that god exists? Do I laugh now, or later?

That's a short quip about a person who states they were an Atheist for 20 years and then one day felt guilty, and prayed to God for forgiveness. That's not evidence that god exists. That's evidence of a person saying they are one thing but not really being that one thing 'cause they felt guilt for being it. They were never an Atheist. Why would an Atheist feel guilt for being an Atheist unless someone opposite to their non-belief was making them feel that way? So, either they were forced by the opposition, and caved in, or they never were an Atheist to begin with.

Either way: it's still not evidence.

What is there to explain. An atheist became a christian. Big deal, it happens all the time. I can only assume that you are the OP, but even if you aren't, I don't care. It's really no big surprise that someone became a christian.

What I want to know is what made this person feel lost. Where they home alone? I mean, I'm home alone right now and I don't feel like praying to god. Were they depressed about something? I don't know, but that OP is very vague.

I abandoned cheese in my late teens and have been cheese-free for over 20 years. Three days ago, alone, I suddenly started praying to the Laughing Cow for forgiveness. I don't know why, but I suddenly realized I had been lost for all those long years. I can't make any sense of it and I was feeling horrible hunger for a couple of days afterward. I just wanted to say that amazing things happen. It just happened to me.

I've seen you make that comment in a few threads, and it's a pretty decent idea. Probably makes more sense than trying to have a discussion by proxy.

All this mention of cheese is reminding me of this "Cheese War" I participated in at another website. I was both on the for cheese and against cheese side (under two separate accounts). Good times. The war lasted over a year. Late 2001 to early 2003. RIP Cheese War. Many fell in your name, and against your name. All hail Cheese!!!

Another explanation is that this person never really gave up his belief in Jesus but was going through a rebellious phase and his indoctrination just now kicked in with overwhelming guilt. That happens a lot. As a minister I saw it more times than I can count.

One of the commenters said, "Faith comprises intellectual, emotional, and volitional components. Although the intellectual component pertains to propositional truth, much of which is directly susceptible to some kind of logical or scientific testing, faith taken as a whole is much more like trust in another person than belief in an idea."

If there is an intellectual component to faith that is directly susceptible to logical or scientific testing, where are the results of that testing? As far as I can see, any time faith is put to the test, it fails. Trust in another person is based on past experience. Past experience with God seems to show that he is not worthy of trust.

I think that MrFriday may be right. It doesn't appear that the person in question really lost their faith. Personally I'd question their emotional health.
