Us minority of RATIONALISTS [#1432]
« on: May 28, 2009, 07:35:01 PM »
Just want to tell you how great your website is. It sometimes feels lonely knowing
that out of my dozens of friends I am one of the very few rationalists (a term I
began using after watching an episode of Bill Maher, but now know that you use this
term as well). I have been a rationalist ever since I could remember. I was the only
kid in kindergarten who didn't believe in Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny because of
simple objective reasoning. Just because gifts showed up under the tree didn't mean
a man in a sleigh was riding above the world every Christmas, nor did it mean
zombies were breaking in and giving kids gifts. All it meant was that the gifts were
there, and they got there from a perfectly logical reason. I'm 22 now and as
rational as ever :)

But I digress... Just wanted to say that anytime I have a conversation with a
religious person I ALWAYS send your website to them so they may take a look and
understand where I am coming from. You represent everything good about being a
rational, scientific thinker. I hear too many atheists and anti-religious people
saying they hate religion or god because they think they are evil....rather than not
believing in religion or god because of scientific evidence disproving them. Too
many people let emotions get in the way rather than explaining that there is as
little reason to believe in god as there is to believe in leprachauns, zombies,
unicorns, and dragons.

                       Take care friends,
                          [name]

I see you have already joined us, good for you and welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! Although I will have a busy schedule as a graduate student starting June 1st for my doctorate, I hope to be here on the forums as much I can! Don't forget to pray to the magical hamster (my personal lord and savior) to make sure you wake in the morning. If you do, that is proof that my magical hamster is god himself.

I ate a hamster last night. It was purely an accident, it fell on my grill, and...well, I hope that wasn't your Lord and Saviour, and if the hamster was. Tasted a bit like chicken.

I suspect that your magical hamster is Who my cats are chasing across my face when they wake me up at quarter to six in the morning.  ;D

Thank you sir!

I actually have a funny story about the profession I am entering. In one of my shadowing/interning experiences, one of the PTs asked what I religion I was. I told her I didn't believe in any religion, or god. She then asked me, "Why do you want to be a PT then?" When I asked her how the two correlate she said, "well, you don't believe in god so why do you want to help people?"

Talk about pissing me off...that pretty much sent me through the f*ckin ROOF!

^^ Yeah, ignorant bigotry gets under a person's skin. I don't know what I would have said but my opinion of that person would suffer a great deal.

I would have said something along the lines of:  "The same reason why a moral person would."
The highest moral human authority is copied by our Gandhi neurons through observation.
