If you asked historical people what the soul was, they'd say it did all the
self-awareness and thinking and feeling and whatnot. The soul is obviously
fake from what we've seen from traumatic brain injuries. Specific parts are
associated with individual memories, abilities, skills, personality. You can
take a person apart piece by piece. Everything about them is represented in
a scientifically understood hunk of electrified meat and can be slowly,
deliberately disassembled until the person is no longer a person. If I can
pull out your love of your mother or make you into a child molester with a
few precise cuts of a scalpel, you obviously have no magical otherworldly
soul.
