Working in a Nursing Home, I frequently saw patients who were dying "perk up" before they passed away.  They would sit up, talk and eat for about a day and then go back to actively dying.  We wanted to gently tell the families not to get their hopes up that this appearance of recovery would last, that their loved one may continue to fail again.  But usually ended up explaining this phenomenon after the patient was no longer lucid.
It doesn't make sense to let go of something you've had for so long.  But it also doesn't make sense to hold on when there's actually nothing there.

The mind and the body going through the dying process is amazing.
Yo, put that in your pipe and smoke it.  Quit ragging on my Lord.
