User online feature - what is this for?
« on: June 13, 2017, 06:01:53 AM »
Appreciating that this isn't the only website that allows such a feature, but as this is something I've been unclear about for some time wanted to ask this anyways.

What exactly is this kind of website feature intended for?

It occurs to me that we can already see who is online at the bottom of the screen whenever we log in.

I also, personally, have concerns because of recently having found some things out on online safety (that I didn't know before) with regards to this feature appearing (at least to me) to encourage/allow users to spy on what other users are doing. If my impression is right, I just don't see how this is a good idea?

Is this a feature that just came with the default forum set up here?

Edit: Hoping that nobody minds my raising my feedback/takes personal offence at it as don't mean this offensively.

When you sign in, there's a box you can tick that will make you invisible for the session.

Appreciate that confirmation. I'd forgotten about that.
