Outage of June 16, 2014
« on: June 16, 2014, 01:21:17 PM »
We are back, for the moment.  I do not know what caused the outage.  I guess a problem with the host's server.  In any event, we seem to have lost the last two weeks of posts.

Is there any way to get them back?

Well...crap.

No kidding. I lost close to 300 posts, if not more. Now I'm back to being a regular, old non-10ker. My life is over. :'(

doubtful.  I assume that some bit of hardware bit the dust and was restored with whatever the most recent back-up was.

*sigh*
Now I have to wait another two weeks (more or less) to break 10000 posts again...
Well, thanks for telling me/us.

Ouch. :(

Well, one thing I know... there's no way in (non-existent) hell that I'm going to repeat 22+ pages of what was an exercise in futility in the "GPG-separate from the human brain" thread. &)

See, if you had your settings to 50 posts per page, even the whole thread wouldn't be that long. &)

It still would have felt like being sucked in to an intellectual black hole with no hope of escape.

Pro-tip: Don't read the entire reply as you would this sentence. Read it as quickly as possible, so as not to be sucked into it. You'll get the basic idea, but it's much less damaging.

The outage was because I changed my profile pic for the first time in a few years.  Sorry about that everyone.

Another outage...

Is there any way to get them back?

doubtful.  I assume that some bit of hardware bit the dust and was restored with whatever the most recent back-up was.

Yup. What kind of a solution to fixing a hardware problem is that: Our hardware goes down, your site loses shit. Shouldn't they do nightly backups anyway?!? Most servers do automatic backups anyway in case of issues on their end.

I think the domain is hosted on ez-web-hosting.com, which claims:

 9x Daily Backups

All of your files are backed up nine times every twenty four hours. Other hosts charge extra for services like backups. We don’t.

Emily,

That could be.  But keep in mind, my explanation was at best, an educated guess.

Well, to be fair, they back up files 9x daily, not databases  ;).

Lots of stuff has reverted back to the date of whatever backup was recovered. That includes posts, replies, Karma, mod actions, etc. It sucks, but we can keep moving forward in the mean time.

I only lost two...but it will probably take a long time to get them back again. Wish it had eaten that one negative Darwin instead.

I think we lost stuff again; specifically some (admittedly minor) member settings. When I tried viewing the "Who's Online" page, it went back to the default "Everyone" view, when I have always used "Members Only". This happened immediately after the outage as well, but, once I put it the way I wanted it, it stayed that way until today.

yes, it is a sign that you were correct and need to repeat your answers for extra emphasis, or it is a sign that you were incorrect and need to start again, or it is a sign that you were neither correct or incorrect but irrelevant and shouldn't post anymore.
