As a young kid in the tropics i saw a girl get pulled out of the water screaming, when the got her to the beach her eyes were in the back of her head and she convulsed into shock from the indescribable pain of a box jellyfish sting. these almost formless animals have extremely long invisible tentacles and they just float with the current.

we had RE and the guy was talking about creation and i asked him why god made box jellyfish.

Venom one of the most toxic known. to attack the central nervous system rapidly to stun fish and subdue them and not allow the fish to damage their delicate tentacles.

irukandji jellyfish are about as bad.  But they are about 1 cubic cm, with meter long tentacles.

I can see why it would be taken the wrong way by a bible teacher.

Teacher: ...that's why God sent Jesus down. Any questions?

eh!: Why did god make box jellyfish?
"God is just and fair"
*God kills 2.5 million of people he KNEW would turn out like this in the flood*
*Humanity turns bad again, when God knew it would*
We should feel guilty for this.

Well Eh... see God is perfect and all powerful and all knowing and he loves each and every one of us ok?

So, when God makes a mistake, it's a PERFECT mistake like destroying a whole town with a tidal wave or creating box jellyfish or giving kids bone cancer.  That's why God is perfect and loving and non-contradictory.

Makes sense right?

I must have missed the Bible verse where God commanded us to swim in the ocean with the sea creatures.

Chalk this one up to just plain old human free will. The ocean is not our home.

Who are the jellyfish ancestors?
Where are the fossils of the jellyfish with the "messed up traits" that died out before the successful jellyfish took over?

Genesis 1:28
Quote
God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

And now Septic will tell us jellyfish aren't actually fish (but bats are birds)

That doesn't mean to jump in the ocean with them just like "ruling over birds" doesn't mean to "jump off a cliff and try to fly."

It means we are the most prized creatures that God created.

you will substantiate this with the "no swimming in the ocean" scripture....

didn't some disciples fish for a living, good chance of getting wet.

finding jelly fish "bones" does not answer the question I asked, but then again does skep ever answer asked questions....hmmm, not on any thread I have seen.

Fishing and swimming are 2 different things. if one decides to use their free will to go swimming, then the risk is on them. obviously, it is sad when anyone gets hurt, but that's the risk one takes.

The fact that jellyfish are avoidable by not swimming doesn't answer the question of why they were supposedly created in the first place.

Fishing and swimming are 2 different things.

I don't think so.  It's not safe to fish on a boat if you don't know how to swim.  It would be irresponsible for someone in a culture that fishes to send their young out on boats without first teaching them a few things about the ocean more broadly.

And in any case, the question seems to me to be more about why there is seemingly needless suffering.

most likely created so that God's glory could be fully manifest. it really is a remarkable creature.

the need for such toxic venom in an animal that kind of just dumbly floats with the tide and bumps into things and kills them is a manifestation of gods glory?

That is a very undersimplification.

That's like me saying this about a car:

A big hunk of steel that spits out gas is something we should find special?

By the way, you can still be stung by a jellyfish (even a dead one) that washes up onto the beach -- often times they are very difficult to see as they're nearly transparent.

I speak from personal experience  :o -- the local news in the seaside town I grew up in would caution beachgoers about it (there is actually a jellyfish season there when this sort of thing is prevalent).

It means we are the most prized creatures that God created.

Which explains why we are also soooooo delicious (as per our local bears).
