The Purifying Fire

NBC's photographers are quite good but the images are rather large for the WWGHA site - click on the links.

I see parallels:

Germans Spring Into Easter With Bonfire Tradition http://www.nbcnews.com/news/religion/germans-spring-easter-bonfire-tradition-n85011
People watch an Easter bonfire next to the river Elbe in Hamburg, Germany, on Saturday. The age-old tradition symbolizes the coming of spring and was believed to banish the evil spirits of winter.

The point here is that nobody in German believes the old tradition: it’s just fun to do.

Holy Fire: Faithful Gather in Christianity's Sacred Site http://www.nbcnews.com/news/religion/holy-fire-faithful-gather-christianitys-sacred-site-n84881
Worshippers hold candles as they take part in the Holy Fire ceremony at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem's Old City on Saturday. Eastern Orthodox Christians believe the Holy Fire is a miracle that occurs every year at the church when a blue light is said to emanate from within the Tomb of Christ and quickly spreads around the church and outside to Jerusalem and even to foreign countries.

Apparently, the spiritual are still amazed by fire and believe that it can banish evil and bring happiness.

The point here is that Christians believe the old tradition: it’s deadly serious
Nobody says “There are many things that we thought were natural processes, but now know that a god did them.”

...Didn't we discover fire over 40.000 years ago? I said in another thread that theists tend to be slow when it comes to accepting new facts, but...
The truth is absolute. Life forms are specks of specks (...) of specks of dust in the universe.
Why settle for normal, when you can be so much more? Why settle for something, when you can have everything?
We choose our own gods.

It seems unlikely, but might there be anything to suggest that the reverence for the fire may have Persian roots, or is it more likely that the xian examples are home-grown?
