Black Dwarf
« on: April 10, 2014, 10:29:52 AM »
Hello everyone. I'm a Christian and I'm using the name "Black Dwarf", which is what I currently use on a rather smaller board hosted in the UK. "Black Dwarf" was allegedly the nickname AthanasiusWiki was given. However, I found out after I had started using it that he probably never was called that. Still, I think it sounds good so I'm sticking with it.

I have been a Christian 35 years or so, having become a Christian at university. I'm an evangelical Christian, but if you are a Yank you might find that there are slightly different nuances to the use of that term by a British Evangelical like me. In particular many more of us on this side of the Pond are OK with stuff like evolution and much fewer of us a Pre-Millenialists, i.e. many of us don't believe in Jesus coming back for some earthly reign (we are all for immediate judgement when he does that rather than faff around for 1000 years). :)

Anyway, here's hoping for some fruitful discussion. I'm not sure how often I'll be posting as I probably spend too much time on the UK board already and shouldn't really be spending any additional time anywhere, but it's kind of addictive, isn't it.

Welcome Black Dwarf.

There are many Brits[1] and many other nationalities here already but the majority is American. I am pleased you mention that there are fewer fundamentalists in the UK but there are still sects around who revel in Bible literalism and the Baptists are, of course, amongst us.

You will see that the majority here are atheists but with a fair smattering of everything else from agnostics to Christians. As you post, and as I assume you will do it from the standpoint of your faith, you will find that you will be overwhelmed by points and question: take your time.

In the introduction forum, debate is not encouraged.

I look forward to your posting - there has been a shortage of new ideas.

Welcome aboard! For a brief moment I forgot my colors and thought you were a Red Dwarf fan. Oh well.  ;D

That's so sad.  Your parents must have been devastated.

Welcome to the forum.
The truth is absolute. Life forms are specks of specks (...) of specks of dust in the universe.

Yes, they were very wary at first, having given up on church about 13 years before after an argument with the vicar and the Aberfan disaster of 1966.

Mind you, they both came back the the Faith a few years later. Good, eh?

Thanks for the welcome.

Welcome to the community Black Dwarf, It's always nice to have another chewtoy  theist around. ;-)

Is the name a reference to Narnia, cosmology or something else?

Thanks for the welcome. I've put a brief note in my OP above.

See you around, I hope.

Good?  No. Not at all.  It's a fucking tragedy on a level greater than Romeo and Juliette.

I look forward to having a meaningful discussion with you elsewhere. I gather such discussions are not deemed appropriate in this bit of the board.

We may discuss here, but not debate.  As I am not challenging you on any particular point beyond personal taste, (and mainly, I am just horsing around with the new guy) we're good.  I'll stop doing that, though.

If you'd like to discuss anything in particular, peruse  the threads and see if one seems close enough and jump in.  If not you are free to start a thread.  Try to keep the topic within the general theme of that board.

Which denomination of evangelical are you?

Also, I am giving you access to the Shelter.

I've chipped in on a couple already.

I'm Church of England (henceforth CofE), for better or worse. The CofE is a very broad church ranging from "swinging from the chandeliers charismatics" through "more catholic than the Pope" catholics to liberals who, well, I don't really know what they believe (not sure they do either), though the liberal wing does seem to be in decline. I'm also a Reader in it (aka Licensed Lay Ministers).

I did not know the C of E was considered evangelical.  I thought evangelicals were all literalist dunces who thought the earth was created no more than 10,000 years ago.

Then it has been joining WWGHA just to be able to let you know different. :)

The evangelical wing of the CofE is quite large, but there are plenty of catholics and liberals too.

Welcome to the forum.

As I am unaware of there being any theists from the UK on this board, it's refreshing to see one.
