New or Old
« on: March 26, 2014, 12:55:26 PM »
After reading several articles over the past few months, topics here and elsewhere I wonder if it's a new propaganda spin or an old one where if one atheist does something objectional toward non-atheists all are deemed as being objectional in the same light.

I'm thinking it's old but has its main propaganda-roots, perhaps, in Christianity:

Jews killed Christ therefore all Jews are to blame --

That mentality seemed to carry for a long time; in many places it probably still does.

Muslims were the cause of 9/11 therefore all Muslims are to blame --

That's what I got from most Christians where I live, at the time; there are still places in the US where Christians do everything they can to make sure Mosques aren't put up in their towns/cities and if they are they see they are taxed (one town in Florida attempted that, if I remember correctly) so heavily that they couldn't afford to stay.

Stalin, Lenin, Hitler[1], Pol Pot were mass murderers therefore all atheists are mass murderers --

And apparently a bevy of other things. Atheists make up the US prison system in a dominated Christian population. Atheists do this, that, and the other thing toward theists, mainly Christians in Christian dominated populations. And when one of them does it: they all do it.

Old tactic newly resurfaced?

My impression is that yes, this is an old track.

There is much to be said for the theory that people become upset when they perceive they have lost control of a given situation.  It doesn't matter whether or not they have actually lost control; the reality is the perception of losing control.

Thus, as the USA switches from being predominantly WASP to embodying a true "Melting Pot" that we were taught to revere (provided the pot was primarily WASP in time past) people see their privileged status eroding.  For some, it means adjustment to a new reality and for others it means a frantic battle to "bring back the good old days" and, when that cannot be accomplished, find a simple answer in the guise of "who do we blame?".

Atheists are an excellent choice for blame because they tend to be intellectual (can't trust them thinkers) and they are godless.  Merciful heavens!  Since they are godless, atheists must also be without a moral compass which explains why they gravitate to Socialism or Communism and beat their spouses and care only about themselves and are always bitter or angry and have a high divorce rate.  See how easy it is to paint a broad brush about any group?  Especially one that is not united strongly?

As a correlation, there is another theory on human behavior I find irritatingly accurate:  The thing(s) you cannot stand in others tend to be the thing(s) one is guilty of doing.

End of lecture.

As always,

Entirely. Though I would not really dignify it with the word 'tactic' - instead "Old stupidity newly resurfaced"...

Having said that I think people on this site (myself included  :-[) who often engage in equally lazy pejorative judgements of religious believers. Easy mistake to make...
