The Church Lady
Rod returns to the Japanese ghosts via an op-ed by Ross Douthat the Asshat. If I read him correctly, Asshat suggests that there is a magical spirit world all around us and the only thing keeping it hidden from our eyes is secularism. We don't see it because we've trained ourselves to not see it. http://www.theamericanconservative.com/dreher/the-religious-way-of-knowing/
the guy he quotes, Taylor, suggests that people experienced the world in a different, enchanted way. But I think experienced is the wrong word. Interpreted, I think is correct. It is not that people actually experienced possesion or spirits, it is that they interpreted an experience as being those things. But now, with modern secular knowedge, we know that is not the case.
As usual, Rod's headline is almost completely misleading.
