And some USA citizens wonder why we (the civilized world) consider them a backward people, among other things.

It will be fun to watch Scalia and Thomas squirm their way out of that..........oh wait, the word lesbian does not appear in the original constitution.

Someone else already brought this up. Oh, no wait...that's on Idaho.

The thing is, especially Kansas, they already have other unconstitutional shit as laws and no one does anything about it. They literally get away with it. So, until someone, like the Federal government, does something they'll continue to pass these laws.

They are wasting their time and their taxpayers' money. There is no way this BS law will pass constitutional muster.

Since U.S vs Winsor struck down DOMA in June, gay marriage and gay rights has never lost in the state or federal court system.

Every judge, in every state, has sided with equality over discrimination. The fat lady is singing but the Kansas Statehouse hasn't been listening.

The state senate isn't going to pass this. Even the Republican senate president is refusing it saying that the GOP doesn't condone discrimination. That's a bit of a stretch but this was to much even for the Christianists.

Wow. Unbelievable. The [very tiny] libertarian streak in me wants people to be allowed to openly discriminate against gays in their businesses and let the capitalist chips fall. Put a list of these businesses online and watch them go under in shame.

But the reality is that never worked with race, and the people denied services would end up being hurt. Do you bake cakes or not, moran? Why do you care about the sexuality of who will eat it? Is your god that petty and mean? God hates cake.

Gah. I hate these a$$hats with the heat of a thousand suns.

And Republicans still don't understand how they're the fascists. They are the dictators, the one's against "freedom" (except for themselves but even then...). They think they're for the people when they are only for themselves...well, and white people.

They think that passing these stupid discriminatory laws will keep those other people in line and under control. Why are the so concerned with the behavior of people who do not acknowledge their religion?

That's why I wish they would pass these laws, but targeting only members of their own faith, and then really have to live with the consequences.  Like how about no wedding services of any kind to Christians who have gotten divorced and are remarrying? How about no divorces-- for Christians? Isn't divorce an abomination? How about requiring that internet providers publish the names of all Christians who look at porn (lusting in their hearts). How about  having all pharmacists refuse to sell Christians any medication because, they should pray to god alone for healing.

Adultery, fornication, abortion, contraception, STD treatment, gay marriage, interfaith marriage, interracial marriage, drug use, eating shellfish-- anything not biblical should be prevented, punished or refused--but only for Christians.

Wonder why such laws specifically forbidding believers from violating their own beliefs aren't proposed as often as the general anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti-sex ed, anti-evolution laws. They don't pass laws that favor their religious beliefs if those laws would actually force them to follow their own rules.

They don't really want to live by their own religious rules, but they want to be able to feel superior and holy by punishing other people-- for not living by the religious rules of total strangers! Seriously, do they want to live by Muslim or Hindu laws?  The prospect of that terrifies them. So why don't they understand that other people don't want to live by their religious rules?

Why are the so concerned with the behavior of people who do not acknowledge their religion?

Because they are conservative.  They do not see the world the same way as we do.  They see conformity to a certain moral code (theirs) as an necessity for the continued existence of society.  All this liberalization and rather rapid change in society makes them feel like the world is literally falling to pieces.  They really are scared shitless.  This is their reaction to it, trying to "hold it all together".

I linked some essays by Jonathan Haidt the other day.  Look them up.  He does a pretty good job explaining the difference in moral perception between liberals and conservatives.

I understand the psychology of conservatism, the strong father model, etc. The part I don't get is the fact that they themselves can't or don't want to follow their own rules, but want to try to force other people to do it....

Same way they want prostitution, sex without marriage, the "gay lifestyle", booze, drugs, porn--even contraception and abortion-- to be illegal so the people involved can be looked down upon and punished, but they still want those things to remain somehow available for when they want them.[1]

That is why common-sense arguments, or data from Europe that show how legalizing and regulating "vices" actually reduces overall harm don't cut any ice with these people. Without immediate harm there is less cost to committing the sin. We have had theists here who "joke" that they would approve of legal abortion as long as the women get no anesthesia! They can't come right out and say it, but they want there to be harm! Otherwise sin does not hurt enough.
 1. At a high price, plus having to deal with danger and a criminal element to feel really shameful and dirty about it. Poor urban slums like black ghettos and the barrio should supply the vices so "nice" suburban or rural communities can stay "nice".
