Religious doublethink
« on: December 03, 2013, 03:00:23 PM »
Religious people often engage in doublethink.  Here are some examples.

I have faith in god.  Faith is a good thing. /////  Atheism requires faith.  Faith is a bad thing.

Thou shall not kill, ////// God can kill anyone he wants.  We all deserve it.

God is good.  ////// We cannot presume to judge god.

What else can you think of?

The "God loves us" thingy juxtapositioned with the simultaneous threat of hell always amazes me. It redefines love as a meaningless and fickle emotion.

Another one:

If god were to reveal himself to us, we would lose our free will /////  I have a personal relationship with god.

God does not want robots /////// God wants us to worship him (or suffer forever!)

You can't have too much faith in god!  ///////  Atheism requires too much faith!

When they get all prickly over philosophical materialism, then tell us of all the miraculous manifestations of God in the material world.

The truth is absolute. Life forms are specks of specks (...) of specks of dust in the universe.
Why settle for normal, when you can be so much more? Why settle for something, when you can have everything?

You just can't comprehend god///here's this bible verse that will explain god

My religion is true because x million people would not believe a lie///most people who say they belong to my religion are not really believers

My religious belief makes me a better person///we all have god's morality written on our hearts even if we have never heard of god

Miracles are proof of god, because only the true god can heal and perform miracles///demons heal and perform miracles to trick people

God came to me when I was in jail--an unbelieving criminal drug-addict child-rapist monster sinner-- and gave me a spiritual experience that made me know he was real///god won't go where he is not welcome--you have to invite him into your heart

Science is atheistic and false///the bible [or Quran] is full of modern science-- that proves god is real because how else could those ancient people know about atoms and nuclear physics?

I could go on and on....

You have free will. //// If you don't do what God wants you'll go to hell.

Lying is a sin. //// Saying that Jesus cured even before you're cured you is not lying, it's faith.

Jesus doesn't have religion. //// Come to my church every day, else you'll go to hell.

Satan is a loser. //// Satan is going around this world destroying lives.

You need to detach from material things. //// Give me 10% of your salary.

God gives us everything. //// Please help us with money to maintain this church.

Only by accepting Jesus you can go to heaven. //// Some parent of mine was a good person, even if atheist, so he went to heaven.

Here's another good one:

Noah took only a few basic "kinds" of animals on the ark, and after the flood they all quickly changed into the millions of different species we have today. So the single cat "kind" became all the cat species including lion, tiger, cheetah, panther, puma, Manx and calico. In less than 10,000 years.

///The theory of evolution can't possibly be true because one animal can't change into another kind of animal, even if you have millions of years.

Of course, there is no fossil or DNA evidence to support the ark "kinds" story...because it was pulled from where the sun doesn't shine.  &)

You can't have miracles today because that would force people to believe in God/ You need to believe in God because look at all those miracles in the Bible.
An Omnipowerful God needed to sacrifice himself to himself (but only for a long weekend) in order to avert his own wrath against his own creations who he made in a manner knowing that they weren't going to live up to his standards.

And you should feel guilty for this. Give me money.

The bible should be taken literally! /////// The bible is metaphorical!

The bible is the guide to life! /////// *ignores 90% of the contents*

You need to humble yourself before you can follow god. //////  I have a personal relationship with god.  God loves me.

I do not add words to the bible. ////// Oh, but that part really means....

If you want to live a good life, it's simple, just read the bible///but not the way those people in that church over there read the bible!

To any/all theists: any rebuttals forthcoming?

Another one:

You're taking it out of context! /////////  *quote bible verse without any context.  Repeatedly*

But, the old testament no longer applies // The Ten Commandments... blah, blah, blah

The proof is all around you // Proof denies faith

Who are you to question the word/actions of god? // That's a mistranslation, my god would ever have said/done that

Only humans have souls // Animals go to heaven

I have a personal relationship with Jesus // I can't tell you what he thinks

God is beyond human understanding // This is what god wants, means, needs etc

God is beyond science // Science proves god exists

I am skeptical of science!  I have rigid standards for proofs of its claims! ///// The bible says it, I believe it, the end!

Seems more of an equalization rather than doublethink.

That is more like: science has to prove each and every step to my exacting standards or I won't believe it, even if it is something that I actually use everyday///if it's part of my religion, I believe it without any proof at all, even if it is something that is impossible in my everyday life

The Catholics at least are guilty of the following:

Suicide is a sin which gets you sent to hell /// Martyrdom is awesome and gets you into heaven

I know that suicide and martyrdom aren't the exact same thing, but they both involve dying an avoidable death because of whats going on in your head. That makes them close enough to compare in my book.

also:

Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's /// Churches should never have to pay taxes, even when they preach politics.
The relevant equation is: Knowledge = power = energy = matter = mass; a good bookshop is just a genteel Black Hole that knows how to read." - Terry Pratchet
