Hi there from A Tippling Philosopher
« on: November 09, 2013, 06:45:55 AM »
Hi to all. My name is Jonathan MS Pearce (yes, my full and proper name - no hiding, eek). I am a blogger over at the Skeptic Ink Network under the blogging name A Tippling Philosopher.

I am an author, teacher and public speaker from the south of the UK with a predilection for philosophy. I hope to have some interesting chats, though it may be sporadic since I have a mighty workload, and many fingers in many pies! Yum yum.

Thanks.

No wonder you like arguing definitions. The problem with that is that other people can also define things the way they want. Without evidence you are just confusing the issues.

Hi there. I don't like arguing definitions, per se. I just think one needs to agree definitions robustly before arguing on the veneer. Otherwise claims are just castles in the air! Have i confused people with a lack of evidence? I have only made a small number of comments....

Even though I'm a non-tippling non-philosopher, I still feel quite inclined to welcome you. So I think I will.

Welcome!

Welcome.  I like pie.  I am slowly reading a book called 500 Things You Should Know About Philosophy.  So maybe I'll have a bit of a clue of what you are saying.   ;)
It doesn't make sense to let go of something you've had for so long.  But it also doesn't make sense to hold on when there's actually nothing there.

I'd like to say "welcome"  but you got here first :)  So I'll say that it's good to see you here.

I completely agree with this.  A lot of time is wasted by people arguing past each other because they haven't invested a little effort  in clarifying terms.  People seem very resistant to this, as if you are trying to steal the argument by imposing your own definition, or worse, that you are wasting time by defining the obvious  "depends what you mean by 'is'".

I say keep at it and if people bitch about it,  it means at least they've noticed what you are saying :)  Atheists pride themselves on being rational but it's not easy to stay honest.  Satan tempts us at every turn.

A belated welcome from me, Jonathan.

Good to see another Brit on the board. Also, thank you for including my post in your blog - that was a nice thing to do. :)
