Unperturbed by uncertainty
« on: November 04, 2013, 06:12:46 AM »
Greetings all.

I've never believed in the existence of any god/s. I'm content in my perpetual search for that which can't be obtained, that being certainty or "truth". I hope to learn some new things here and maybe impart a bit of wisdom and knowledge to others.

See you all on the boards!

They don't work alone.  This is why I became skilled at bowel disimpaction when I was a CNA.   :o  Welcome to the forum.  I am the former crazy theist.  I maintain my fragile grasp on sanity by providing comic relief where I can.  I am now a  disillusioned non believer.    :(  Don't know what to do my 1st xmas without faith & a kid who still believes.  Think I'll celebrate Saturnalia  or Solstice & still put up my tree.   :-\

It doesn't make sense to let go of something you've had for so long.  But it also doesn't make sense to hold on when there's actually nothing there.

We've always have a tree, and I made it a point to casually talk about the various ways that time of year is acknowledged around the world when my kids were younger. We just put our emphasis and attention on family, friends, and charity, and left the religious aspect alone.

The first thing to do when looking for something is to define it. Can you do that?

As I told you before, and I am sure others, too: Christmas has nothing to do with Christians, especially today. Anyway, Jesus was born around August or so (if he existed) so Jesus day should be then. My sister-in-law is a strong atheist, she celebrates because even she agrees it has nothing to with Christianity.

I recently bought a 2-film Christmas collection of It's a Wonderful Life which only mentions angels. Doesn't mention Biblegod  or Jesus, or anything. What Christianity is in that movie? And the other film White Christmas. Where is Jesus and Biblegod  in that film? "Lord" was mentioned in a song but past that: no where else. See, even back then Christmas wasn't about Christianity--when has it ever?

^this.

I will be celebrating xmas EXACTLY the way I did before I "deconverted."  Which is to say, I go bananas decorating til it looks like "the house that threw up xmas" - put up a HUGE tree, watch tons of xmas movies, listen to cheesy xmas music, bake cookies for the neighbors with the kids (a yearly tradition for a decade now), buy dumb but fun presents and in general just enjoy the crazy holiday atmosphere - I LOVE it.  ;D

I see no reason to rename it or try to change it.  It's not necessary.

As my first official "out of the atheist closet" xmas, I will celebrate it like I always do.  Drag all the shit out of the attic, put up the tree with the kids, listen to the wife bitch about the commercialization of "the lord's holiday," pass out all the presents, then take down all the shit and put it away again.  Bah frickin' humbug...

It's Winter Solstice. Just called Christmas by Christians back in the day so they wouldn't be persecuted. Today, has nothing to do with Jesus no matter what Christians say. A tree, in this sense, is an idol. You give presents on birthdays, it's not everyone's birthday on Christmas day, so all those gifts should be to Jesus. So presents have nothing to do with Christmas. Sleighs, reindeers, Santa, Jack Frost, the Snowman, etc., what do they have to do with Christianity? Nothing. They would, like a tree, be considered "idols".

It's a pagan holiday. Always has been.

I just think it's a great word - sums up, I think, what people aim for. I mean it more in a Pyrrhonian sense than a Epicurean sense, though.

Hello and welcome Ataraxia!

Since I'm too lazy to pull your NSA file, tell us something about yourself.
Liverpool or ManU?
Mark Selby or Mark Williams?
William Regal or Davey Boy?
Hammond or Clarkson?
Iron Maiden or ... ok, that's just silly ... of course you're a massive Maiden fan
If I stoke you a clipper, will you be back for Christmas?

I'm in "happiness" mode.
I've never experienced anything like it before!  Oh, except for that one time when I accidentally welded my groinal socket to a front- loading washing machine.
