State the largest fish you have ever caught.
« on: October 05, 2013, 09:22:40 AM »
Thats right, A&A has made a topic...NOT ABOUT TULPAE. (What a surprise.)

Anyway, I like fishing, so i want to know what scaly demons from the briny deep you have caught.

While not impressive, i have caught a Shovel nose ray about one meter in length.

Edit: Bonus questions.
Was it hard to catch?
Was it tasty?
Did you kick its ass when it came to fighting it on the line?
Off-topic bonus question: Who is the best pony?

First result is about skateboards.

A Christian.

Don't be so hard on fish, fish are far too smart to be a christian.

It was this [                                                           ] big.

3 inches? (I have bad eyes, so i cant tell that length)
That's not very big, but impressively small...

Can some one here actually post a fish however?

This fish is about 3 inches long depending on how you measure by your screen resolution/size. However, when you look at the big picture you'll probably come to a different conclusion for obvious reasons.

^^^ It's a sturgeon - One of the oldest and largest freshwater fish. It's also known as a "prehistoric fish" but I just call it "big religion" fish.  ;)

Back in 1973 when I was 20, during a long holiday weekend I went camping along the Shenandoah River in West Virginia with 2 friends who I was stationed with at Marine Corp Base Quantico, VA.

We drove there in a Ford Pinto packed to the hilt, found a road dirt road along the river, ditched the car in some underbrush (camouflaged it). We hauled our minimal survival equipment to a small island in the river and set up camp. Do you know how much beer you need to survive a long weekend in the wilderness?

While we were terrorizing the passing canoeists (playing Navy Seal in the river), we noticed there was quite a number of catfish inhabiting the river. I decided I was gonna catch one. The two country boys I was camping with laughed and mocked me unbelievably. A city boy without the right fishing equipment surely was hallucinating.

I found some string, a safety pin and a worm. I sat patiently, line in the water off the edge of our island and after 5 minutes I hooked a decent sized catfish. I was very happy and was slamming it in the faces of my country buddies. They didn't even care, they had huge eyes and had the catfish cleaned, skinned and fileted in minutes.

We cooked the fillets on a stick over a campfire coated in butter salt and pepper. It is one of the most elegant meals I've ever eaten. We enjoyed 3 more fish that weekend, they were excellent with our canned beans.......

PS, sorry but 40 years has distorted my memory about their size but they must have been pretty big.

I hate fishing.  everything about it.  But when I was 10, I tried it.  I caught a 10 lb catfish.  It was horrid.  It tasted like pond muck.

That must be a challenge.

It's the most technically difficult and fascinating thing I've done in four decades of mad hard-core flyfishing for hundreds of different species.  I was shown the secrets only about 6 months ago by a chap called Jim - a pioneer of flyfishing for various sharks.  Everything has to be planned and executed to perfection.  A lot of people try on fly but only foul-hook them - but it is possible to get them to eat a fly almost like a bonefish would.  You wait in ambush on a mudflat with a rising tide - total stealth is required.  You see the fish coming, lead it by several meters, let the fly sink to the bottom, and then twitch the fly on the bottom just as the shovelnose passes over it - all its sensory systems are designed to detect movement of little crabs and molluscs on the bottom - the shovelnose descends on the fly trapping it with its wings and eats the fake offering ;)

xD.

Here there are very few sand-flats (most are up north), so you can only catch them by using a large hook (or a small one...) with a large chunk of the longest lasting bait you can find (A whole squid works alright).

Did you gut it first because if you don't, it could make it taste like shit.

It can also depend on what the fish ate, Catfish are known for getting a muddy taste if they are in bad waters.

That's true but still thoroughly gutting and cleaning a fish can cut back on that. I find skinning a catfish is best, since the skin has a pungent taste to it.

I used to work in the seafood shop of a supermarket in the 90's, and a customer asked me to skin a bass that he was purchasing, that wasn't as easy as skinning a catfish.

You're right, it's like peeling a banana.

I was never a fan of skinning, i prefer scaling.

I peel off the skin after cooking.

Edit: Whats this? A + darwin, impossibru!
One thing i have not tried though, skinning a shark...i can imagine it being...difficult.
