Yes, I am the smartest person in a whole state.  And it was easy (Only half-kidding).

I was raised southern baptist but never really got into it, even though my father was a deacon and my only brother-in-law a preacher.

I have been a self-recognized atheist since 1977, i.e., most of my adult life since I am 64 yrs. old.

We have an atheist meet-up group in Jackson and around 20 or so come to the monthly meetings.  About half of them seem to be transplants and half native-born, like me.

I'm close to being a charter member of Freedom of Religion Foundation.  They do good work.

I like the name of this forum.  It sort of puts the religious on the defensive at the get go, does it not? lol.

We have so much in common. I am a former Southern Baptist and I was born in 1977.

I like to think of myself as technically a former southern baptist.  IOW I don't remember being given much of a choice (during my time as a dependent of my parents).

Welcome jgl53. We're about the same age but I was born and raised in Oregon and didn't have to put up with the religious crap. I did spend close to a year in Biloxi while in the Air Force, but luckily I didn't catch anything. Stick around. We have fun, even though a lot of us don't have accents. Well, not southern accents.

Welcome jgl53. I'm the same age as you but have never suffered from religion. My father was an atheist and gave me a good grounding in dismissing fairy stories. If you notice the extra 'u' and fewer 'z's in my writing, it's because I'm in the UK.

Mississippi?  Isn't that one of those states that has a church on every other block?

And welcome.  Oh, and how did you find us?

It's OK, Nam.  There is a turkey vulture out there with fond memories of you. ;)

Mississippi does have a lot of churches but I think most southern states are highly competitive in that area.

I don't remember how I heard of WWGHA.  I think someone may have mentioned it on one of the other forums I frequent, most likely Librarything.com.
