Hello Everyone
« on: September 23, 2013, 04:47:21 PM »
Having done a few posts I think it is time to say hello here.
My name is Jonny and I am a 41 year old atheist living in the UK.
I have never believed in any god or gods.Even as a child I can remember feeling uncomfortable singing in church or saying prayers.
I fully admit to having believed in Santa Claus as a child though!
It has been so heartwarming to read posts on this forum and finding myself agreeing with so many things posted.
I do not have a great knowledge of religion but even looking at it in simple terms I do not think it adds up so why look deeper ? (I do appreciate that many theists only know the parts of the bible that are cherry picked for them in church)
I look forward to joining in with discussions in the future.

Welcome!

I will have you know that I NEVER believed in Santa Claus! I've always been an asantaist!
(Well, I did of course believe in Saint Nicholas ... but not SANTA! ;) )

Actually, while on the subject of childhood beliefs, realising that it was my parents who hid the easter eggs was my very first baby-step towards Atheism.

BTW, whereabout in the UK are you from? PLEASE be Welsh! ;)

Hello and welcome aboard the good ship Lollipop!  ;D

Thank you for the welcome.
Sorry but I am not Welsh. I live in the coastal town of Morecambe in Lancashire.
Great place but a bit breezy in the winter.

That's one corner of England I've never been near ... closest I got was York and/or Llandudno ... almost three decades ago ... where has the time gone?!

So your family were still going to church in 70's and 80's Britain ? What bad luck was that.

I never even heard of Christianity as child. The first religion I heard anything about was Hinduism. That was through a music connection. So I read some books about Hinduism and learnt some Sanskrit. Later I started lessons in the bible at school but the stories always seemed so naive to me. Whenever the teacher asked me a question I always said "it does not agree with reality". The school put me in the lowest class for religion for " lack of interest ". Actually my real feeling was anger that an adult was spouting such nonsense to kids, myself being one of them. What I noticed was that it was the quiet kids who most easily accepted it, especially the quiet kids of low intelligence. Recently I was browsing on the Internet and accidentally came upon the website of one of those religious nuts who say they have been chosen by god to set up a new church and lead their followers to heaven. I was surprised to see that it was one of the quiet boys from my school who had needed special lessons to help him read and write! The teachers had put in all the extra effort with him and he had misused it.

I urge any religious person to look carefully at the educational background of their preacher and ask carefully who it is who wants to control your life. Is it god who wants to control your life or your preacher and is he so well qualified that you would trust him to control your life?

What can I say but sorry.

FoxyFreedom- Thanks for the reply. It was actually school that took me to church- school and church were a short walk apart. I had a very good friend at school who's family were Sikh so I realised early on that they can't all be right and hence maybe none are.
My mum found religion later in life when she got together with my step dad.
My real dad was an asshole and she felt it must have been god that guided her to my step dad.

Thanks again to every one for the welcomes

Welcome aboard J-UK. Enjoy the ride.

I was an asantaist as well, but somehow infected with the religious bug for many years.  Happily religion-free now!

I've never been to UK, but my ancestors were from assorted places there... so I guess it's in my blood!
If xian hell really exists, the stench of the burning billions of us should be a constant, putrid reminder to the handful of heavenward xians how loving your god is.  - neopagan
