Lets go to Court
« on: September 23, 2013, 03:26:13 PM »
Apologies if this has been touched on before somewhere.

I'm happy for schools to teach what man kind has done in the name of religion as part of history and to give an overview of lots of different religions around the world  but I don't like religious stories being taught as fact.

How about we start to take religious stories to court.

The creation story must be first on the list-
For the prosecution we could have dinosaur and neanderthal fossils, carbon dating information etc
The defense would have their story and what ever evidence they could provide for it.

If the story was found to be not factual then perhaps a law could be passed to stop said story being taught as fact.

I do admit it might be hard to find suitable juries though !

In the US, the First Amendment to our Constitution in theory protects any creation story from being taught as fact (in the public schools) by stating:
Quote
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,
http://www.ask.com/wiki/First_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution?o=2800&qsrc=999

So far every court case contesting this (and the fundies keep trying) has been against teaching creationism on being on a par with the currently accepted theories of cosmology and evolution. Subtle and less-subtle abuses of this of course continue in public schools unless / until someone objects to the practice.

Thanks to the higher visibility of atheism, such incidents are popping up in the media more often. Such as Jessica Ahlquist's struggle to get an obviously Christian school-endorsed mural replaced at her high school:http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2013/09/22/jessica-ahlquists-high-school-now-has-a-new-secular-mural/

Thanks Wright. I have learned a few new things.
I have been a bit concerned that our current prime minister here (David Cameron) was actually pushing for an increase in Faith schools.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationnews/7073322/David-Cameron-calls-for-more-faith-schools.html

I don't know how many new ones have opened here but the numbers are on the up.

The very fact a school is a "faith" school must mean they are teaching religion as fact to some degree.

Johnny if you know of anyone involved in teaching creationism in your area, report it to your education authority. They will sack anyone who teaches it.

We had some Americans working undercover as pastors in our area and giving out creationist literature. They were sent home and the head is under investigation for allowing it to happen.

Foxy, is this the incident you mean? http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2013/09/14/head-teachers-suspended-for-inviting-u-s-missionaries-into-scottish-schools/

It should be taken as both encouragement and a warning. The more reactionary, conservative religious sects are acknowledging that they are increasingly marginal to mainstream society; if they weren't, they wouldn't have to resort to such underhanded methods.

OTOH, that realization makes them increasingly desperate and even more reactionary; they're unlikely to just give up. Atheists and secular authorities should stay alert for similar illegal / inappropriate attempts to inject religion into civil and private life.

The creation story was probably a bad choice with reference to schools as I do not know of it actually being taught anywhere here.I remember seeing it being taught in a documentary  (featuring Richard Dawkins if i remember correctly) but I'm sure it was in America and I now assume would have been in a private school.
Thanks for the reply.

Creationists should realise that in Britain their ideas are seen as a joke. We have  Charles Darwin on our currency for good reason.

The only chance they have is to sneak into schools and try to trick young children as mentioned above.

As far as I know we only have one private school set up especially to teach creationism. It was set up by Blair in the north east of England. Since then the rules against teaching creationism have been strengthened to stop it spreading.

One issue which is being discussed in Britain at the moment is to change the morning assembly from an opt out system to an opt in system since no one is interested in morning prayers anymore. Check it out online to see if there is a petition or group in your area which can apply pressure.
