The solstices and the equinoxes are REAL.  And throughout history, people who lived far away from the equator, found reason to mark the approximate dates of these events. 

I think holidays and celebrations and traditions are wonderful, and are among the purposes that religions serve.  No reason not to embrace the solstice.
