Switzerland Abandoning Relgiously-themed National Anthem
« on: August 08, 2013, 08:17:01 AM »
The Swiss government is holding a competition, open to all Swiss citizens, to write a new, secular anthem to replace the existing religiously-oriented one.  Another sign of the times.

Maybe when they do we can start the ball rolling on ours as well?

I coulsn't tell from the article whether the idea was to keep the same tune or not - not having heard it its hard to say, but in general I hope they do.  After all, 99% of people just hum along after the first couple lines anyways.....
Just because you've always done it that way doesn't mean it's not incredibly stupid.

^^^  Could we even call the Star Spangled Banner in the US a religiously-oriented anthem as it is sung/used today?  I know further down in verse 4(?) there are some deistic appeals, but I think you'd be hard-pressed to find many people who even knew the national anthem had more than one verse.

You might draw more attention to the issue, and get the religious right and theists in a twitter by even suggesting the change.  Heaven forbid (pun intended), we'd have the Tea Party and all NASCAR fans pushing for Congress to pass a law that all four verses be sung...

Good for the Swiss, nonetheless

Will they next recall the Swiss guard from the Vatican?
Yo, put that in your pipe and smoke it.  Quit ragging on my Lord.

What's so good about giving up 172 years of history just to appease non-believers.

The American National Anthem is solo piece that very few people can sing.  The pop stars who perform it at sports events massacre it.  They should euthanize that work if they aren't going to allow it to be done the way it was written.
It doesn't make sense to let go of something you've had for so long.  But it also doesn't make sense to hold on when there's actually nothing there.

I don't care for the star spangled banner.  The melody was taken from a british drinking song, so they say.  The lyrics are all about war.  I have always preferred America the Beautiful.  Better tune, better sentiment.  I'd like to replace the "god shed his grace on thee" part with something else, though, and make that our national anthem.

Wouldn't it be a better idea to deal with the Swiss flag first, if they really want to deal with this issue?

By your logic then slavery should still exist, South Africa should go back to being a state of white power, the world should go back under religious dictatorships under the Pope (goodbye protestantism in the US) etc., etc.,

Do you think before you make inane comments. Doubtful. I've read two of your comments so far, and you do have that idiotic streak going for you.

^^^No, we should abandon industrial production, agriculture and settled civilization entirely. Go back 10,000 years to hunter-gatherer life. Why stop at only 172 years? Older ideas and practices are always better.  &)
Extraordinary claims of the bible don't even have ordinary evidence.

Kids aren't paying attention most of the time in science classes so it seems silly to get worked up over ID being taught in schools.

Why not, when so much of that kind of stuff is only there in the first place to appease the religious? Like "In God We Trust" on U.S. currency, or "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, neither of which were originally present, and neither of which serves any non-contrived secular purpose. Removing it doesn't exclude the religious, it just stops giving them preferential treatment.

"Oh Beautiful for smoggy skies, insecticided grain,
For strip-mined mountain's majesty above the asphalt plain.
America, America, man sheds his waste on thee,
And hides the pines with billboard signs, from sea to oily sea."

George Carlin, who I think was stealing a bit from Mad Magazine
