Abington v. Schempp: Fiftieth Anniversary
« on: June 17, 2013, 09:49:09 AM »
Today is the fiftieth anniversary of one of the more important rulings on state/church separation to have come out of SCOTUS: Abington v. Schempp, which held that school-sponsored readings of religious texts was unconstitutional.  The ruling back then was eight-to-one.  I wonder what it would be with the composition of today's court.

5-4 in favor of bringing religion (the right religion) back into the schools.
Yo, put that in your pipe and smoke it.  Quit ragging on my Lord.

In the UK, in my school days - 1953-67 - every day started with Morning Service and Announcements. Catlix, JWs, Mormons, and other assorted heathens were taken off to a separate classroom where they could finish their homework. Eventually,as an atheist, I was allowed to join them... ever been in a class entirely composed of the deluded?

Roberts, Scalia, Kennedy, Thomas, Alito - probably Yes
Ginsberg, Breyer, Sotomayor, Kagan - probably No

Crap, he's right.
It doesn't make sense to let go of something you've had for so long.  But it also doesn't make sense to hold on when there's actually nothing there.
