How do you turn energy into matter?
« on: May 11, 2013, 02:12:11 PM »
I (think I) understand the opposite process: pump enough energy into something and it actually turns into energy. However, how would turning energy into matter actually work?[1]
 1. In theory, obviously. AFAIK nobody's actually done it.
The truth is absolute. Life forms are specks of specks (...) of specks of dust in the universe.
Why settle for normal, when you can be so much more? Why settle for something, when you can have everything?

Particle accelerators use the greatly increased speed of the particles they're colliding to create heavier particles that then decay.[1]  This turns the kinetic energy of the colliding particles into mass; that is, energy into matter.
 1. This is not all they do, but it's one of the things they can do.

Very wel explained ,Indeed.Energy into matter is not so difficult to understand.

Ever grown a plant? Then you've done it.  ;)
Actually it doesn't. One could conceivably be all-powerful but not exceptionally intelligent.

Stop, stop with all the science stuff.  All we need to know is in the bible.

Nick, all the bible talks about is turning "doesn't matter" into "wasted energy". And we've covered that pretty much. Time to do something new.

Yes, but he doesn't have the energy.

:-[ Willie, I think you've given me an undeserved up-vote. I wasn't trying to be clever...

I was (perhaps harshly) pointing out that Nick trots out that insult a bit too often.

Edit to add: I don't feel too bad about the bonus up-vote. I've received plenty of un-derserved down votes.  ;)

Read the labels on your food.  If it's high in kJ eat plenty of it.  What you seek will appear on your waistline in a matter of days
Only joking of course, this example is just shifting energy in one storage to energy in another storage.

Oh, and don't try this in your backyard:

Didnt Einstien tell us all about it with E=MC2

Didnt Einstien tell us all about it with E=MC2

E=MC2 only explains how to transform matter into energy and is (somewhat) easily interpretable. Even if we were to solve the equation the other way[1], all we'd get is M=E/C2, which is meaningless, AFAICT.
 1. I say "the other way" because I don't know the English term for it.

that is such a good point, now the question needs to be what constant can E or M be given so we can transpose the formula

E=mc2 is a ratio which applies in either direction. That is why there is an = sign.

The most relevant circumstance of energy becoming matter is in the early universe.

Nick, The reason this is relevant is that Christians like to make the false claim that something cannot come from nothing.

Not only does e=mc^2 work in the other direction but it's also theorized that it's possible to put enough energy into a point in space that it can collapse into a black hole. Look up kugelblitz
