EdgedInBlue... I believe in Guitars but not god
« on: May 04, 2013, 08:57:17 PM »
Hi.

I'm an atheistic agnostic with a particularly religious background.

Raised a southern baptist, I was sent off by bus three times a week during my childhood. I was part of the "memorize now, never ask questions" crew.

When I achieved a majority age, I thought to seek the source and became a Catholic. In doing so, I became not only a tertiary Benedictine, but a catechist and PSR instructor as well.  I am VERY well versed in the theistic views. ;)

When my husband died, I was rather released to be who I was in whatever form I chose.

I chose atheist intellectual. I wear it well.

Hei, EdgedInBlue!  Welcome.

Do you "worship" any particular types of guitar, or the instrument in general?  (Me, I tend towards the electric variety.)

Wow, from Baptist to Catholic.  Sounds like there was a lot going on in your life.  After all that how did you come to the land of rational thought?

And welcome.

To Astreja: I am particularly fond of blues guitars. My favorites include Gary Moore, Rory Gallagher, Joe Bonamassa, Seasick Steve, Peter Green, and Snowy White (among many, many others). I've seen most in person AND retained my hearing!

To Nick:  Yes, what a long, strange trip it's been!

Thanks to all for your welcome. Two caveats I suppose I must present are that I often make musical references AND that I am a sociologists so I tend to view religion as a construct on the macro and not on the micro.

Eric Clapton is the Guitar God.
It doesn't make sense to let go of something you've had for so long.  But it also doesn't make sense to hold on when there's actually nothing there.

Hey EdgedIB you didn't mention which guitar/guitarist you worship

beware of false prophets

Eric Clapton is the Guitar God.

there is only the triune god

Roy Buchanan
(kicks in bigtime at 3:01) the greatest unknown tone

Robert Fripp
(kicks in at 1:27  and doesn't stop) incendiary (to borrow the word)

Frank Zappa
(to avoid typical Zappa NSFW unPC go directly to 4:45  for the true heavenly flight >listen through the brief central scrutiniser at 7:45 to 8:18 and witness the genius relaunch into the gloriously howling guitar)

My 15 favorite guitarists in no particular order.

Jimi Hendricks, Randy Rhodes, Eddy VanHalen, Steven VanZandt, Joe Perry, Eric Johnson, Pete Townsend, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Brian May, Keith Richards, , Robbie Kreiger, Prince, BB King, Carlos Santana

I do like Zappa but for his lyrics.

I'm not a big fan of Clapton except for his song Layla, which is brilliant.  I'm also not a fan of Van Halen except for his song Aint Talkin Bout Love.

Stevie Ray Vaughan
Mark Knopfler
Lindsey Buckingham
David Gilmour
Steve Stevens
Keith Richards
Brian May
Jennifer Turner (Tigerlily was her opus)
Jim Heath aka Reverend Horton Heat
Dick Dale

Nuno Bettencourt (best known for his work with Extreme)

He never pays attention, he always knows the answer, and he can never tell you how he knows. We can't keep thrashing him. He is a bad example to the other pupils. There's no educating a smart boy.

Just in case you didn't know, you have edging in your name. Edging is the sexual practice of teasing someone near sexual climax and stopping. Its dom fantasy, mate.

Hello there, when I saw your intro title I knew this was a post I had to read. You've hit the right note with me by mentioning Gary Moore,Peter Green and Rory Gallagher. For me add Angus Young,Jimmy Page,Blackmore and of course Jimi Hendrix but also the likes of Johnny Marr,John Squire are huge favourite, the list could go on all night.lol.
.
Oh aye, forgot to mention Bert Jansch, that guy amazes me.As for guitars themselves I love the look and feel of a Lea Paul,it just looks right. The SG is damn good too but nothing quite works on all fronts like a Strat, just feels perfect to play and nothing sounds quite like a strat !!!

God ???

Music is real, god is fiction, just a bad rumour.

Funny enough,I used to jam in a band with a guy who's parents were proper christians though he claimed he didn't buy into that god shit. One day I said to him,for no particular reason other than it came to my mind, that Jimi Hendrix was a far more important and significant figure than Jesus Christ and did a lot more good for the world.

Well,he couldn't have looked more shocked and offended if I'd told him I'd been having a 3some with his mum and sister every friday night for over ten years. He spluttered and stammered a second rhen nervously laughed like he suddenly realised I was joking, which I kind of was in an off hand way but after his reaction and the sense it was a preposterous notion kind of pissed me off.

So I stated my case simply.Legacy, look what they did, what they both left behind. That music in comparison with christianity and all turmoil and hate  it's left in it's wake.I rest my case.lol.

Anyway, glad to hear there's another guitar nut here.Do you play ???

I don't know if EgedInBlue will ever respond as he only has 5 posts since starting this thread back in May.  I'm not what you would call a guitar nut, but I just did my last show with my rock band a few days ago.  We played around the Midwest and South in US for the last 6-7 years.  I'm mainly a bass guitarist but can play a guitar if needed.  What kind of guitars and music do you play?  If you look at my pics you'll see I'm a Schecter guy.

Ah the musicians come out! I am a guitar nut as well.
My favs would be:
Hendrix (obviously)
Zakk Wylde
John Petrucci
Warren Haynes
Duane Allman
EVH
Alexi Laiho
And recently Synyster Gates

Oh who am I kidding this list could go on for pages.
I am a Les Paul guy but I love me some Vs. I am waiting on my 7 string BC Rich that the wife went halfzies on for Xmas.

Fastbob mentioned strats but I haven’t found much use for those. I respect them don’t get me wrong but I don’t make any music where the thinner tone fits. Give me the thick hum bucker mahogany sound anyday!

Rev what Schecters do you play?

Alexi Laiho
I just saw Children of Bodom in St. Louis a few months ago.  Alexi is awesome to watch live.  If you haven't yet I highly recommend going to see them.

I have a C-4 and a Custom 6.  The 6 was a good backup although I never got real comfortable with the six strings.  I found myself messing up quite a bit, but it has a tone I really like.  The C-4 is my workhorse which I use for shows, touring, recording, pretty much everything.  It's still the best sounding bass guitar I've ever heard and I pretty much refuse to use any other bass guitar ever again.  The day it dies I will have a full fledged funeral for it.
