In some countries they have laws against this sort of thing. Years ago, I met the American brothers, John and Peter Horne. Nothing strange there, but both had the middle name "Trajanbattle."

Here are some Urban myths: http://www.namenerds.com/uucn/advice/sightings.html  Not entirely accurate, there was a Nosmo King, the stage name of a 1920s(?) British comedian.

My mother is a nurse and one day she was checking in on a lady who just had or was about to a baby.  When my mom asked this lady the name of her baby she said she hadn't picked a name yet.  The lady looked out the window and saw it was raining.  The baby wound up with the name Rainy Day.

In high school there was a kid a few years under me who's name was Midas King.

My last name is Green.  When we were expecting our first girl, I played around with color names.  Orange Green.  Scarlet Green.  Violet Green.  I would have really enjoyed Red Green as a tribute to the Red Green show.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Red_Green_Show

In the "worst names of 2012" list here in Belgium, there was a Klaartje Comen.
Now, 'tje' is a diminutive so, when she grows up, people will call her Klaar ... Klaar Comen ... which is pronounced exactly like the Dutch for "to orgasm"  :o

I worked at a technical college for a while and ran across some interesting names:

"Gunther" (German male name) - woman (no German accent)
"Akira" (Japanese male name & famous anime movie) - woman (not Japanese)

Didn't meet this woman, only saw her name in the files:

"I-luv-Ashanti" (WTF? Why not just name your kid "Ashanti"?)

Worked with a woman who earnestly said she was going to name her new baby the following (don't actually remember the second middle name but it was ordinary like Robert so I'm using that):

"Sincere Xavier Robert" [last name here]

I tried to convince her to switch them around saying that even "Xavier" was better since it was a real name but to no avail. When I asked her what they would call him as a nickname "Sin" or "Cere", she replied "Junior" (or "Bubba" or something else totally unrelated which fried my mind a bit so I don't remember the exact nickname).

To forstall any stupidly racist comments about these people: while two were black their parents did pick real names, the really stupid one was very definitely white. Don't recall with certainty the race of the woman from the files.

Working there convinced me that prospective parents should be required to have sufficient pets before they had children to get the stupid names out of their systems.

My mother had an uncle named "Hugh Hughes".

My mother is named Penny and married into a surname amusingly similar to that.

My dad had a teacher at school named Albert Ross.

A kid my friend teaches has the first name ABCDE (pronounced ab-sa-dee)

I once had a duck called Dinner.

When I was in the Army I met a guy who had his name legally changed to "Y" because apparently he had woke up in the middle of the night screaming "YYYYYYY."
It doesn't make sense to let go of something you've had for so long.  But it also doesn't make sense to hold on when there's actually nothing there.

I went to high school with a guy named Ozzie Ausburne. He was a smart kid and a bit of a high-achiever, academically. It always got a chuckle during the morning announcements when Ozzie Osbourne (or so it sounded) had made the honor roll or some other such thing. This was in the early 1980's, when Ozzie Osbourne was at the peak of his fame. We also had a Steve Martin, but he didn't seem to get noticed as much.

I went to College with somebody named James James-Cheeseman.

He asked us to call him Jamie, unsurprisingly.

Successful songwriting brothers Jim and Brett Beavers have a father named Harry. No joke.

I knew a girl in HS whose name was Pretty. She actually wasn't pretty, and she was quite mean.

To me it seems cruel to give a girl a name like that. If she is pretty, it comes off as superficial and conceited. If she isn't, it only serves to highlight her lack of beauty, and provides fodder for childhood teasing and humiliation. Kids can be very cruel. Perhaps her meanness was a product of how she had been treated.

Many years ago, a couple of co-workers told me of a rather homely girl that they went to school with who had the misfortune of being named Aphrodite. She, too was said to be not very nice.

Remembering how badly unattractive girls were sometimes treated when I was a kid in school, even without having unfortunate names, I think I might have become mean too if I had endured that. I was chunky, nerdy, and generally unpopular, so I was the recipient of quite a bit of childhood cruelty myself. But I think the homely girls still got it way worse than I did.
