How laughable. I stumbled across this website because I was browsing through the religion section on yahoo answers and someone asked if masturbation was a sin and someone responded that it is a sin and that they should stop, not only because it causes spiritual problems but also health problems and he linked the guy a website called http://www.howtostopmasturbation.com/is-masturbation-healthy-science-says-no.html

This website claims that masturbation causes higher rates of depression, sexual frustration, an increased risk of prostate cancer "less happiness" LOL Among other ridiculous claims. Christians are so deluded that it isn't even funny. No wonder why Christians have so much sexual frustration, they deprive themselves of sex unless it is within marriage, many even go so far as to not even masturbate. I've seen so many younger individuals posting in those religious sections on websites tormented that they are going crazy because of their sexual urges but they are not allowed to act on them because it is a "sin." Christianity should not be allowed in society. It makes people crazy, causes so much intolerance, and it torments youths.

Damn, I'm fucked!
When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle. Then I realised that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me.

I agree that this is rather ridiculous.

If you think about it, though, it makes a certain subtle, cynical, kind of sense, from a Christian perspective.  Guys want to have sex; if they masturbate, their semen is wasted; therefore, convince them it's 'bad' to masturbate, and they'll happily find women to have sex with.  *eyeroll*

Everything is a sin if you don't suffer in the process. Those who consider misery the pinnacle of human achievement are not likely to approve of anything that feels good besides counting the parishioners money. That's how they get off.

Is it OK for women to masturbate as they won't be wasting their eggs in the process?

I know it is funny, but it is also tragically sad.

May I ask those of you who were taught that it was "bad" or "evil" or "sinful" to allow your body to do what your body does naturally, did you believe it?  I mean, for a young kid, I assume it is sort of naughty and private and something you certainly don't want your mom to know about, but did you ever believe that it was evil?

And how did that sort of indoctrination impact on your adult sexuality?

I found some website when I was 13 and it basically said, "porn and masturbation are alright if it's a woman, or man and a woman, and you aren't married". And cited some bible verses saying as much. I didn't need any more permission than that!

I looked for it a few months ago to post on another thread here but couldn't find it or else I'd reproduce it.

Everyone at my church was really squeamish about talking about the whole subject. They would always make euphemisms (e.g. "teenage prengancies", "sinning against your body") instead of actually say "no sex or masturbation". Especially, no romantic relationships with non-Christians. You could have non-Christian friends, if you were trying to convert them or at least proselytize every now and then ;)

I don't think it affected me sexually, but I missed out on a few relationships with girls in my youth that I'm really miffed that I didn't get to have. I've never been with anyone actually, even after I stopped believing. I think I just got turned off romance altogether.

This actually links back to our dear friend Pascal (who probably masturbated too ... the wanker).
When you buy in to Pascal's wager, you're assuming that whatever god is out there is actually being honest. Maybe god values logic reasoning. So when you've been a good christian all your life and die and go before god and he tells you "What the hell?! I gave you these MASSIVELY AWESOME genitals and you let them go to waste because of some silly lines in a fucked up old book. "
"But you wrote it!" says the christian.
"Who cares! It's fucked up! It's so obvious! I couldn't make it any more obviously FUCKED UP!!! No, sorry, no heaven for you, but hey, don't feel bad, it's all just stuff you wouldn't like anyway ... sex, drugs, beer, heavy metal, big burly gay men skipping through flowery meadows ..."

Perhaps its so you know what to pray for in advance.

did you believe it?

Sorta, kinda, but not really.  It certainly didn't stop me - though it may have slowed me down - and I didn't really feel guilty about it.  I confessed it, because I was supposed to.  But I could see no possible way the church's position on this was anything but preposterous.  Their taboos on premarital sex, I could understand.  Whacking off?  Seriously?  What next?  Is blowing my nose a sin too?

I recognized it as superstition from the Dark Ages.  I think this was one of the first ideas that made me question my religious beliefs.

A lot of christians have no problem with lying. It stands to reason that they'd come up with stuff like this. However, I doubt the fear they try to shove down young people's throats override their hormones.

You're right, no matter what kind of religious nonsense is fed to a child they will still have raging sex hormones.  I call child abuse, because most children fear Hell, that's what Xtianity is all about, avoiding Hell and going to Heaven, Xtians claim it's all about Jesus and God, but no, it's all about avoiding Hell. If you brainwash a kid all throughout their preteens with that bullshit in their early teens they will have so much sexual frustration. Sure, they'll "sin" and give into masturbation and sex, but what happens after that? They feel guilty, and torment themselves because they "sinned" even though what they are doing is perfectly natural.  They fear their Biblegod will never forgive them, and I can't tell you how many posts I've seen on religious forums from young teens  that are very depressed because they have raging sex hormones and there is nothing they can do about it because they perceive spiritual consequences. Christianity IS child abuse. Most replies to these teens is that it is "Satan" tempting them to sin against their own body, and God, by lusting and doing sexual sin. What utter bullshit.

Interestingly, I remember reading somewhere that if you masturbate 5 times a week you're less likely to get prostate cancer. I suspect over-masturbating causes health risks, but like everything else, it's about moderation.

However, I wonder which one is based on facts and the one based on a religious bias?

I wonder where they're pulling the one out about higher rates of depression. I suspect there's a possibility there's some level of correlation, I mean, you might be a single person unable to find love who masturbates because they can find no love, but that depression would be more linked to being single than to knocking one off[1]. I think it's healthier (in the mental way) for a person to have a relationship with a person, rather than their hand, but the act itself is not harmful.

I get it, it's a sin in the eyes of Christianity, but why can't they just be honest and accept that? Why does there have to be a distortion of the facts to try an accommodate their world views? It's a remarkably dishonest way of doing things, kinda ironic for a religion that considers lying a sin.

I'm thinking that any research into a controversial subject will be used by one party or the other to promote their point of view.  Words like "link" as in "researchers find a link between carrots and multiple sclerosis" usually just imply that they found a correlation which was sufficient to test directly, in order to see if there is a causal link or another factor at play.  But the layperson reads "link" and assumes, by default, that it is causal.  Special interest groups love the word "link."  They can use it to promote their cause, or disparage research that might indicate otherwise (at which point they respond to the word "link" with "correlation does not equal causation!").

Take note, in the OP's link, of how many times words like "associated", "correlated", "linked" and similar words are used in the article headings or abstracts.  Then see if you can find how many of the claims are strengthened or corroborated by additional testing and research.  My guess is that a pattern will emerge.  But that's just correlation. ;)

The irony, to me, is that their ideas are completely backwards from my understanding. Orgasm helps depression. Endorphins and such. And I can't imagine having all those old, bored semen in there is good for anything. Don't they say that you're more likely to get pregnant if the semen are fresh? A very quick search led to this article from http://www.babyhopes.com/articles/abstaining.html ...

Quote
Couples who abstain from sex in the hope of saving sperm until the woman is at her most fertile have definitely been misled. A recent study provides the strongest evidence yet that not only is abstaining from sex of no benefit to couples with normal fertility, but it can also damage the chance of successful conception among couples seeking fertility treatment.

Quote
Researchers found that if men had low sperm counts their sperm steadily became less mobile after an average of one day’s abstinence. Their sperm also began to suffer subtle changes in shape, a sign that the sperm were going stale. But the sperm of men with normal sperm counts showed little change in mobility after abstinence, and did not begin to go stale until much later.

I know this doesn't address the issue of single folks, but I still find it interesting. Why would god care if one wasted stale sperm that wouldn't be used anyway? It gets absorbed after a couple of weeks I think, so its no waste at all. Stupid religious ideas make me cranky.  :o

Interestingly, I remember reading somewhere that if you masturbate 5 times a week you're less likely to get prostate cancer.

But if you do, you'll never find your way to the hospital.

It all dates back to the Victorians/19th century:

Sylvester Graham was an American Presbyterian minister (ordained in 1826) who preached on temperance and stressed whole-wheat flour and vegetarian diets. He was known for his graham crackers. (http://www.ivu.org/history/usa19/graham.html)

"Sylvester Graham preached about the simplicity in which one could spot a victim of self-abuse. Describing a masturbator in detail, he explained how they were introverted, unclean, tired, and had lots of acne or other skin problems. They would grow up with cancerous lesions, and die a slow and painful death." http://www.realitysandwich.com/masturbation_victorian_age

As depicted here:

and guess what these are:
