Poll out today that says 6 out of 10 Americans think the Iraq War was a mistake/not worth it. Same for the other war as well. I would have thought it might even be a little higher than that. 10+ years, 1000s of deaths among our troops, physical and mental disabilities, suicides...increasing all the time, families torn apart, civilians killed by the 100,000 of thousand, trillions spent and wasted...now coming back to affect all of our social programs. Nero may have fiddled, but Bush now paints. What a waste. I saw a bumper sticker today on a truck while at Wal-Mart. It said "Give War A Chance". Pretty sad statement. Maybe we will get this war thing right when we invade Iran and/or North Korea.
Apparently as long as you're president, you can get away with anything. Rethuglicans think Obama is doing that right now with the economy, but if their guy can get away with lying in order to attack a country and kill hundreds of thousands, I'm pretty sure Obama can get away with saving the auto industry and bailing out the economy.
It came out recently that the reason Nixon had his henchmen break into the Democratic offices at the Watergate was because he assumed that they knew that he personally sabotaged the Hanoi peace talks in 1968 while running for president (he told the North Vietnamese to stop negotiating for peace until he took office because he would give them a better deal if he got elected). He was hoping to steal the evidence, whatever that might be. What Nixon didn't know was that Johnson knew about it but wouldn't release the information, which he had secretly and correctly defined as treasonous, for some weird personal or political reason. So Nixon hung himself not knowing there was no need to. At least there is justice in the world, sometimes.
As for the American servicemen who were thrust into the two recent wars, it has to be noted that far more have committed suicide due to PTSD than have died in either of those countries due to combat or IED's. The same went for Vietnam vets. Apparently very few consider that cost when ranting for more war.
addendum: Of course what Nixon told the North Vietnamese and what Nixon actually did after elected were two different things. Americans aren't the only ones who get f**ked over by politicians. These days the people of Iraq know that all too well.
Oh, here is the Nixon story for those of you wanting a little Sunday morning enlightenment. The insight into Nixon is fairly recent:http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-21768668
