Is the bible like a software license for most people?
« on: February 12, 2013, 04:07:39 PM »
I'm guessing that the truth hurts:

The question I get asked by religious people all the time is, without God, what's to stop me from raping all I want? And my answer is: I do rape all I want. And the amount I want is zero. And I do murder all I want, and the amount I want is zero. - Penn Jillette

Oh, snap. ;D
Extraordinary claims of the bible don't even have ordinary evidence.

Quite true.

However there is more to it, they want everyone else to do the same.

Hmm. Excellent comparison.
If we ever travel thousands of light years to a planet inhabited by intelligent life, let's just make patterns in their crops and leave.

Old, but a good comparison.
The truth is absolute. Life forms are specks of specks (...) of specks of dust in the universe.

Also known as Blaziken/Lucifer/All In One.

While old...nobody uses one sentence or another from a software agreement to bludgeon other people into submission, or an excuse for doing what they wanted to do anyway.
Most theist/atheist arguments tend to boil down to this: Theists quote scriptures as if they were facts and atheists cite facts as if they were facts.

The shepherd dude at the local temple does explain a bunch of stuff from it. Enough to make one feel guilty. Then he asks for money.

Judging by the number of times an Atheist will quote fucked up scripture and have the theist go "That's not in the bible!" only to be shown that, Damn, it IS in the bible. I'd say the OP is correct. They never actually read it.

I feel it is more like watching the trailers for Disney's "Pocahontas" cartoon and count it the same as reading the history books.

Same with the US constitution. It is a far more liberal document than most Americans realize. IIRC when passages were shown out of context to people, they thought it was from the Communist Manifesto. They would probably attribute parts of the Communist Manifesto to the teachings of Jesus in the bible. Because people act on what they think they know, rather than what the facts are. :P

Hmm, I THINK I still have an OKCupid account ... might be a good idea for a test, no?

"I have come not to bring peace but the sword"
1) General Eisenhower
2) George Washington
3) Jesus
4) Lenin

or

"The folkish-minded man, in particular, has the sacred duty, each in his own denomination, of making people stop just talking superficially of God's will, and actually fulfill God's will, and not let God's word be desecrated. For God's will gave men their form, their essence and their abilities. Anyone who destroys His work is declaring war on the Lord's creation, the divine will."
1) the Bible
2) the Communist Manifesto
3) Mein Kampf
4) the US Constitution

Could be fun, no?

Without cheating on google, I will guess that the first is from Jesus and the second is Mein Kampf.
