It's obvious, he's gettin outta Dodge before the shit hits the fan with all the worldwide inquests into Catholic Church child abuse. Evil bastard isn't too senile to realise this is the beginning of the end.

I'm unconvinced by the news the the Vatican staff were taken by surprise. I reckon the thing was planned to let him retire and take the child abuse scandal along with him. He seems to have been implicated in trying to cover the matter up and a new pope could come with 'clean hands' so to speak and draw a line under the who rotten lot.

Exactly this.

Seems like the more Mahony documents coming out, the more background we get on Ratzy. And isn't it widely accepted that he sent a memo out years ago begging for people to not talk about it in the Vatican?

Word is that his "appointments" book, the one that records where he will be going, whom he will be meeting, was empty for the year to come.

I really shouldn't be surprised but I was anyway! Betting on all sorts of things around the 'race for the Vatican'!

Oh, and Greybeard, my wife watched the video of his announcement and noted the assembled cardinals looked bored not shocked by the announcement - clear evidence that the resignation as planned.
