Watching the movie Hawaii (1966) for the first time, I discovered that it had nudity among the young Hawaiian women swimming out into the bay to greet the arriving boats of Christian missionaries. The only nudity was the baring of breasts.  While it is surprising that this movie had such nudity for its time, consider that 46 years later we have (or should have) evolved significantly more, but the movie is being shown on WETA (Washington DC public television) with blurred breasts and some obvious scene cuts.

Why can PBS allow National Geographic to show the bouncing breasts of African women but not the naturally unclothed Hawaiians of that time?

First of all, I have to say that I was really disappointed when I opened this thread and started reading.  When I saw that Chronos had started a thread entitled Hawaii, I assumed that, after an extraordinarily difficult year, you were planning a much-deserved tropical holiday, and were coming to the forums for travel tips.

Once I started reading, however, the thread certainly got my attention.

I started googling and looking for an article that I had read several years ago about sexism and racism and the ways that non-white women have been portrayed in non-pornographic media and journalism as almost animalistic.  The example of the nudity of non-white women in National Geographic was cited in the article.

I never found the article I was looking for.  But I think I found something even better! 

Here is a website, put out by a nudist, who is really pissed at National Geographic for its failure to portray white people in the nude.  And he puts together a rather compelling argument.

i wonder how those 'christian missionaries felt about that, did they all cover their eyes?? lol it's so silly..
