This story doesn't surprise me at all. I used to work for a cellular phone company some years back, and we often had customers who, when getting their phone number after buying their phone, wanted to change it because it had three sixes in a row in it somewhere.
Lots of people are irrational. It's the same reason that buildings routinely used to not have 13th floors (and sometimes still do, although mercifully this one bit of stupidity seems to be fading).
