What have you all been up to in the last 2 months?
« on: December 26, 2012, 09:01:32 AM »
Hey all,

Forum's been down for ages. What have you all be up to since the end of October?

I booked some tickets to see Beethoven's 9th Symphony in June at the Albert Hall, secured a place and Scholarship at the Royal College of Music for undergraduate next year on Viola, visited the National Science Museum and went and got pissed a couple of times...

Anyone do anything interesting? :)

I contemplated finishing the siding on my house. That took up all my time so I didn't actually do it. Of course now that the world didn't end, I may actually have to do it. Boy that pisses me off.

When are we going to get a competent doomsday cult anyway?

Probably right after I'm done with my siding. Crap!

I got pregnant.

I pretty much did nothing at all. My favorite winter activity is in a lockout (NHL) so I cannot go to games, but I do see some players because I skate at the same rink they do.  But really, I did nothing interesting.

Congrats on the scholarship, EV.

Just before the forum shut down I managed to get myself a job. I now work in a Call Centre for LG, but not working with anything cool like TV's or mobile phones, I provide customer support for washing machines, fridge/freezers, dishwashers and any other white goods. Good company to work for, staff are great, my boss likes me but there's not a lot of job satisfaction but on the bright side, at least we got proper training (technical included) instead of doing our job by reading from a script, it was a temp-to-perm job and last week my boss said I'm going permanent in mid January, so at least it's job security now. :) No more temping and I can be fussy with what I apply for now. :P

Also, got my gaming laptop repaired and prepared myself for Christmas.

Congrats EV and Emily!

I went to Texas the week before Thanksgiving, with plans to go to the F1 race, but couldn't score tickets, so I ended up partying and golfing with a buddy in Houston and Galveston, with a Friday night spent in Austin.

Austin rocks! \nn/
Actually it doesn't. One could conceivably be all-powerful but not exceptionally intelligent.

Emily, if it's a boy Thor is a good name. ;)

Hey, if it is a girl how about Thoretta? :D

Next time the forum is down I'd suggest a new hobby. The way this forum is you could end up with a whole basketball team if not careful.

I concur. Congratulations are in order for both EV and Emily.

And me too, since I didn't get anyone pregnant and I'm not wasting valuable space in an academic institution.

I've collected the last of the Sibelius orchestral works of Sibelius. Before pressed CDs go extinct. I have some 10 sets of the 7 symphonies.  Much fewer of the vocal and chamber works.

It's hard to believe, but people used to get pregnant all the time before the internet! My wife got pregnant twice! One of them looks a bit like me.

Thanks all  ;D

Emily, CONGRATULATIONS! Great news, I'm sure the little pea will be the sweetest pea that ever did live.

Good taste there, love Sib 2. Fantastic! And the Violin Concerto is incredible. Always been disappointed that he never wrote a Viola Concerto.

Congrats to EV on the scholarship, and Emily on her pregnancy!

What I managed to do in the past couple of months:
  • Finished construction on the downstairs bathroom.
  • A whole bunch of concerts with the 2 community concert bands I play with during the school year -- 2 at a music festival, 2 for Remembrance Day, and at least 5 Christmas shows that I can recall.  In addition to clarinet I got to play piano on a few songs, including a medley of songs from A Charlie Brown Christmas.  (Also bought a portable 88-key digital piano for practising and gigging, as there just aren't enough keys on My aging and temperamental synthesizer.)
  • Went to the Symphony a few times.
  • Staged our annual Yule party and cooked mass quantities of, well, everything I could think of.

Congrats to EV on the scholarship, and Emily on her pregnancy!

So, did EV get a scholarship for making Emily pregnant?

Just kidding. That's what my fuzzy brain thought it read this morning on the first pass.

Congrats to both, but just not together.

I quit my job to go off and get a candidate for an unnamed office elected[1], finished that, then worked on my (c)rap music in my down time with much less success.  I'm about to go back to working a regular person job (inshallah).  But yo, at my last interview I was asked if I was comfortable with sometimes working 12 hour days and I tried hard not to laugh.  My homie from the field office said he actually calculated that he got more sleep the day after the election than he got in the week leading up to it.  Sounded about right.

After the election, I had a grand old time failing at girls again.  But that ended up being fine, even though we tend to run in the same circles.  Also, I find that everyone I know from the various evil lefty campaigns we participated in or were associated with has this weird sense of joy in reading about how spectacularly ORCA failed.
 1. And won.  I'm now officially undefeated in paid campaign staff positions.

I survived hurricane Sandy - 2 weeks without power.
I took Mrs Screwtape to the Carribean for a week.
I read Outliers, but Malcom Gladwell.  It sufficiently explains my failure to be rich.
I spent 2 of the last 7 weeks with my inlaws, proving absence does indeed make the heart grow fonder.
I built a model helicopter.  Bell H-13H.  MASH version, though I did not paint it.[1]

Congratulations EV and Emily. :)

EV I am so happy for you about the scholarship! Wahoo!

Hmm, the last month or so... Paid $20K to have the basement foundation repaired, found my muse and started writing again, and went on a honeymoon with xphobe, whom I met here. Oh, and got to meet up with albeto and hypagoga for Japanese food and hours of great conversation.  :D

I think about you guys a lot more often than I post. My life has gotten so insanely busy that I just don't have time for online discussion like I used to. I've been going through withdrawals for months.
Sheldon: Ever since you started having regular intercourse your mind has lost its edge. You should reflect on that.
Leonard: Well, Einstein had a busy sex life.
Sheldon: Yes, but he never unified gravity with the other forces. If he hadn't been such a hounddog we'd all have time machines.
