We're practically neighbors. Montana here. But the far western end.


I've driven through SD many a time. And done some work on a nice log home near Sturgis. Luckily not in August, during the rally.

I've never been to the Northern Plains (nor some of the not-so-plainy places).

Would like to visit, but have no time. I used to send a Citibank payment to Sioux Falls. That's the closest I've come.

I hear that South Dakota is similar to North Dakota, but the neighbors are 20 miles closer in South Dakota.

Hahaha... Its not quite that bad, I grew up on in Northeastern SD where there was a town of about a 1000 people 40 miles in every direction... People are a little more rare on the west side with exception for the black hills where I currently reside (Rapid City)

Question Mhaberling,

             How is chief Crazy Horse coming along?  I saw it when I was younger, realizing how huge it is (the whole mountain)compared to Rushmore, but I hear the original sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski has died, and the family is continuing to work, refusing outside help?  I'm torn between letting the family take years more, and allowing our government (used to be thought of as many people) help.

I think the owners have stated that they don't want the US governments help because of how the US gov treated the Native Americans, letting them fund the monument is insulting.... I have heard the theory that making more progress on the monument is not as profitable as letting it sit. Weather that is the motivation or not it certainly is true. They do limited blasting every year and it is like thirty some dollars a head to go to the monument. On weather they are purposely limiting it or working as fast as they can is up to speculation.
