How Many Members Does WWGHA Have?

When I get bored here, I go through old posts, or wwgha's statistics. And, I was looking at the Member list and I noticed something strange.

As of 3:17am (eastern/US) wwgha has 3,101 members. So, I wanted to see how many members had no comments and minus our newest member, there are 520 members with no comments. That's not so strange, the site has been up (well, re-up) since 2008 but what I find strange is that between 2011 and 2012 many of the names don't make sense. Examples:

Bogwoovonorry
Buimiuttell
Wrernamnext
Jetenkraie
Absoholliciff

And, I believe about 100+ similar to those. At first I thought perhaps they were of a Nordic language but that didn't jive with me; so, what could it be? Did the website get bombed? I have seen it at other websites. Hell, I bombed a website after an unjust lifetime ban but my names at least made sense. These are just complete nonsense.

I just find it humorous[1]

What do you think?

Just for fun I Googled those user names you listed.  The ONLY thing that came up on ANY of them was this post... so yeah, my guess is some kind of bomb or bot signed a bunch up for whatever reason. (for contrast my name shows 263,000 responses <but I have also found out that my handle happens to be a city in India>).

Most likely those are the screen names of some really holy people who speak in tongues.

Shouldn't they be deleted? The number of members is offset.

It's not 3,101, it's 2,581.

Accounts with 0 posts are usually either spam bots, lurkers, or people who signed up and then forgot about the site.

Admins can always run a purge of accounts with 0 posts, though sometimes it's easier just to leave the accounts there as deleting bot accounts means the bot can just sign up again.  And you never know when your lurkers might post, so why risk deleting some of their accounts?

You're not going to get an accurate number anyways.  Lots of bots get 1-2 posts in, and lots of members make single posts, which will offset the numbers as well (over half the member list has less than 10 posts.)  And then banned members don't show up in the regular member's memberlist (at least in SMF 2.02, I don't remember if they did in 2.0 RC4), so you're not going to get an accurate assessment on that front, either.

If I remember correctly, when I was a mod Hal (the admin, before the staff decided to use their screen names)  sent out a mass e-mail to the users who never posted reminding them of the site and if they don't post their screen name will get deleted, and a few did post to keep their account active. This was years ago, though, and I don't think those users who did post stayed around.

And I think newcomers are welcome; however they are also welcome to our criticisms and are also welcome to obey the rules they agree to when they sign up.

I think some newcomers don't feel welcome.  What can we do to change that?  We have already tried several ideas.

For new xians we have a special area - The Shelter - where only the "nice" atheists get to post and the level of evidence on them is less.  We have a group of people who are Forum Guides (in addition to moderators) to help new xians find their way around.  What else would you suggest?

I think there is a hardcore group..one hard to penetrate..I suppose it is just me..I really do appreciate this site..made my transition much easier.

To create an "adult only" section with little rules, and little moderation (rules would be standard like no illegal material, spamming, etc.,) where theists or atheists can come and argue or preach or dodge or whatever to their heart's content. But only in that section. I referenced allpoetry.com that has a message board with 2 adult sections. One is for adult rational discussion (the rest of this site) and the other adult board is "no rules". You go in there, you're on your own. They used to be more like this place but with the amount of members they have they had to create such an area, in the end.

And many people go there (that adult board), and it's active with theists and atheists with a lot of "religious" topics. Some insane. You can go their and look for yourself.

that is actually the #11 idea in the "volunteers needed" thread.  We've started to address the top 10.  Once we get some action on those, or determine we cannot proceed farther, we'll move on to the next 10.
