Egypt Pyramids
« on: August 19, 2012, 03:16:37 PM »
This is sad and makes me sick at the same time.  Muslim clerics in Egypt are calling for the new president to destroy the pyramids because they are not a part of Islam.  They have wanted this for a long time but think they have the technology to do it now.  Reminds me of the Tailban that destroyed those huge Buddist statues in Afghanistan some years back.

I think Egyptins would have a problem with that. The people, themselves, are still pretty secular. Well, according to The Economist.

Nick, got a source? I heard this was just a rumor created on Twitter.

Good. I feel better if it is a hoax unless the hoax gives them real ideas.

Why would they, though? It's probably their biggest tourist attraction. And, I read in the news that some woman used Google Earth, and supposedly found 3 lost pyramids. Plus, who knows how many more under the sands.

I don't know Nam, when it comes to blasphemy against Islam, even the biggest economic tourism boost must take a back seat.  Blast 'em down....

I doubt the Egyptians would ever allow any group of fanatics to blow up the Pyramids.  Anybody tries to destroy Egypt's monuments, they'll have every caliche driver and trinket seller in Cairo after their heads, and those guys are as tenacious as pit bulls. ;)  Also, the Egyptian monuments are guarded by cops with submachine guns.

Imagine the Chinese getting rid of the Great Wall with the same basic reasoning.

If they tried to blow them up the curse of the mummy would surely destroy them all.
