« on: August 17, 2012, 10:47:09 AM »
Anyone been following the plight of these Russian Rockers who protested Vlad P. in an orthodox church in moscow?  40 seconds of punk will get you 2 years.  Good thing they didn't play the whole set!   :police:

I was staggered that there was an offence of "Being an Enemy of God" in Russia. However, the truth behind the matter is that Pussy Riot sang an anti-Putin song. The Old Russia is back; no surprise really - Russia does not have democracy, it has good tsars and bad tsars.

Why anyone would be surprised that Putin, ex-Lieutenant Colonel in the KGB, would jail people for criticising him, is a mystery.

Actually, from varying articles I've read, a couple from The Economist, Russia has always been the same as it was before, it's just not under the veil of Communism. It's basically, as the articles relayed, run in the same way. And, for the most part: Russians don't seem to care.

Some do, of course.

But, come on? Pussy Riot will serve 2 years, and get rich from it. They only have 6 songs. When they finally get out, record companies will want to pay them excessive amounts of money, and is their music even any good? Won't matter. The US will welcome them.

Sounded like a publicity stunt when they did it, and still does now.

Ugh, tell me about it! I got invited by my neighbors 9 year old daughter to church choir show tomorrow. I love the girl and I couldn't say no to her, but it'll be a rough 2 hours, I'm sure.

Shows that some things never change, but hey, at least it shows Russia for its true colours, whilst is may not be as bad as the days of Stalin, but at least it puts the pressure on Putin. Freedom of expression and freedom to protest, two rights every Russian should have. No wonder the Russian guy I speak to online is more interested in finding loopholes in the system to avoid conscription rather than start a protest or stand up for his freedom of choice.

Anyway, I love you Nick, but don't get any funny ideas now.

Some Christian rock is really good, if you ignore the crazy-ass lyrics.

True, the "Christian" band Me Without You is pretty decent, and i actually like some of their lyrics.  Go figure!

Sixpence None the Richer consider themselves a Christian band. I remember back in 1999 when I worked in Seafood, the butcher next to me saw me listening to music and asked me who it was, and I said Blessid Union of Souls, he thought they were a Christian band. They may be "spiritual", and perhaps Christian, too, but their music isn't.

Pussy Riot is interesting and appealing (almost?) exclusively for their political activism. I don't think they'll consider leaving Russia - barring some serious threat - simply because it would be an admission of defeat; after the sentence, they did refuse to appeal to Putin for a pardon. Which, considering the state of Russia's women's prison camps takes some courage.
Of course, the publicity will help their cause and they won't object to any increased money flow. It's not like political activists get anywhere without provoking people.
"Deferinate" itself appears to be a new word... though I'm perfectly carmotic with it.

So, are you saying their stunt was premeditated so they can Capitalize on their 2 years in jail?

Meanwhile, here in the UK last year, a student was imprisoned for six months for stealing bottled water worth 5 dollars.

I don't think either the UK or the US are in a position to take the moral high ground as far as human rights or knee-jerk Establishment reactions are concerned.
