I was staggered that there was an offence of "Being an Enemy of God" in Russia. However, the truth behind the matter is that Pussy Riot sang an anti-Putin song. The Old Russia is back; no surprise really - Russia does not have democracy, it has good tsars and bad tsars.
Why anyone would be surprised that Putin, ex-Lieutenant Colonel in the KGB, would jail people for criticising him, is a mystery.
Actually, from varying articles I've read, a couple from The Economist, Russia has always been the same as it was before, it's just not under the veil of Communism. It's basically, as the articles relayed, run in the same way. And, for the most part: Russians don't seem to care.
Some do, of course.
But, come on? Pussy Riot will serve 2 years, and get rich from it. They only have 6 songs. When they finally get out, record companies will want to pay them excessive amounts of money, and is their music even any good? Won't matter. The US will welcome them.
Sounded like a publicity stunt when they did it, and still does now.
