From here to Timbuktu (The Taliban at it again)
shnozzola:
--- Quote ---Once again the world is watching with increasing alarm as religious extremists destroy centuries-old historical sites because they find them offensive.
"These tombs and these historic sites in Timbuktu go back to the 15th century," Ofeibea added. "So this is not only Timbuktu's history, it's Africa's history."

Graybeard:
I am reminded of the Dissolution of the MonasteriesWiki under the Protestant leadership of Henry VIII, and the destruction of towns, villages and people in the OT.
various recent wars have focussed on destroying the bases and monuments of the defeated or enemy regime. Remember how the statues of Saddam Hussein, Lenin, Stalin, other Iron Curtain leaders were torn down by enraged mobs. The symbols of National Socialism were destroyed after WW2?
There is much magical thinking and not only in history; all symbols are destroyed in an act of wiping the memories from history and showing who is now in charge.
How are those actions different from those of the Taliban?
Nick:
It seems like it should be a crime to destroy history. Along with those things mentioned above the early Catholic Church was good at destroying books, libraries, basically advanced civilization to forward their cult.

Good question, Graybeard, for us all. Is it important that the sphinx or the great pyramids haven't been torn down? I remember as a kid, enjoying the national geographic shows where tribes practiced land diving. Should first world health officials have rushed in to prevent ankle damage?

Didn't Napoleon blow off the nose on the sphinx?
