Voluntary Income Tax?
« on: June 28, 2012, 08:12:00 PM »
Some how I've never heard this before...

http://www.helium.com/items/1033846-income-tax-fraud-or-is-it

I stumbled across the blog while reading Facebook comments. It's a short 4 page read, but it basically says that there are no actual laws that require you to pay your taxes for wages earned. It says income doesn't include your paycheck because it's money from labor. It says the tax codes exist in lieu of actual laws. They say it's a "Voluntary" income tax.

Either I've been living under a rock or there's more to this story then the writer would like us to believe. Anyone care to enlighten me?
Thank you for considering my point of view; however wrong it may be to you.

Try not paying your taxes and let us know how you fare after you claim it's only voluntary.

I don't think that's such a good idea. I assume the reason the person in the blog was able to get away with not paying it was because the amount was below an amount they care to invest resources in to get? But I really don't know.

There is a whole weird antitax movement who claim there are no laws that make you pay taxes.  They advocate not paying any income taxes.  When they do that, they are often sent to jail.

These people make up about 75-90% of the libertarian party.  And last I checked, we actually had a member who was mostly in agreement with these cranks.

What's true is already so. Owning up to it does not make it worse.

The very wealthy appear to think paying taxes is voluntary and with a few notable exceptions most of them volunteer to pay as litte tax as they possibly can.

The short version is that taxpayers do the work of determining how much tax they owe themselves, rather than requiring the IRS to spend time and money determining it.  That's the voluntary part that people are misinterpreting.

I thought that congress had the power to levy taxes. Is it the income part that people object to, more than the tax part?
Extraordinary claims of the bible don't even have ordinary evidence.

Kids aren't paying attention most of the time in science classes so it seems silly to get worked up over ID being taught in schools.

There are some fruitcakes out there who have this really far-fetched argument that the constitutional amendment in question was never properly ratified and is thus not actually in force.  A few of them have even tried to argue it in court, with about as much success as you would expect.
