The volunteers were hand-picked and asked to volunteer by PM. PM'ing all the active atheists would've taken too long.

You're right Luci. I was thinking about when HAL asked for volunteers in this thread.

Addition: I just don't see what the big deal is. I think PP did a meritable job here explaining the situation. There isn't even anything going on in The Shelter worth commenting on...

I just don't see what the big deal is.

It's a matter of principle. The admins (maybe the whole staff team) judged everyone and asked those they deemed "worthy", if you will, without telling anyone else. They also completely ignored the fact that most people have impulse control, and based their decision on what they observed. I think that these were their major "mistakes".
