Almost a third of Americans are non-religious
« on: April 01, 2012, 03:52:37 PM »
Honestly, I think this is evidence why evangelicals are ramping up the war on religion nonsense -- they're being backed into a corner, marginalized, and it's starting to effect their profit (prophit?) margins.  The love-of-god angle just ain't working anymore; fear, hatred, and bigotry are the last arrows in their quiver.

Quote
Gallup reports that nationwide, 31.5 percent of Americans are nonreligious, meaning for purposes of the poll that religion is not important to them and that they rarely attend religious services.  The poll is for the year 2011.

It was something like 16% just a few years ago.

To double that number in such a short time is quite impressive.
Being a Christian, I've made my decision. That decision offers no compromise; therefore, I'm closed to anything else.

An encouraging poll.

Religion in general is losing ground faster and faster, agreed. This makes the radicals (in the US, the fundie Christians) ever more fearful; their power base is eroding. So they get even more reactionary and defensive, seeing "attacks" in virtually anything and everything that doesn't reek of their own SPAG.

The nice thing is that this highlights their craziness even more, speeding up the process of marginalization. The not-so-nice thing is that, well, they're crazy and more apt to cause collateral damage as they flail desperately about.

Unfortunately, they still have a lot of resources (money and ignorant, fearful followers) to exert leverage with. They're on the way out, but they're not gonna go quietly.

Speaking as someone living in a state represented by Michele Bachmann (although thankfully no longer in her district), this cheers me up quite a bit!

It is only amazing that twice as many people are brave enough to assert that they are non-religious. The fact is that 50% or more are non-religious. The closest that most of them get to being religious is to pray for someone when they are sick, to "god bless" someone in bad times or to exchange god/jesus graphics on Facebook. Most of these people don't see the inside of a sanctuary except once or twice a year for a funeral or a marriage.

Of course, this sort of news pleases me no end - whether it's 15% or 30%, it's clear that more and more Americans are leaving the clutches of religious delusion and moving over to reality.  This is excellent.

However, even a small number of fundamentalist religious fanatics are very, very worrisome.  And America has a very large number of people who consider themselves Evangelical and/or Dominionist, they are getting very worried about what they perceive as a direct threat (in this, they may be correct) - and so their fear levels are going higher and higher every month.

Fear is the most powerful motivator for human beings - all other instincts come in secondary.  They are scared, they are bunkering down, they are forming groups to influence politics in a big way.  The Republican party is full of them - so is the military.

Just one Dominionist , with a handful of medical radioactive material, dedicated to the cause and full of fear can wreak havoc in this country - the amount of damage that 10's of millions of them can do is beyond my imagination.

So in my view, of course an increase in non-believers (although I think it's closer to 15% not 30%, but I can't prove it - I've known 'new age' types to check 'not religious' in survey's at work, and that's no better than checking protestant) is a great thing - but remember, that means those who insist on a literal interpretation of the bible are getting more and more fearful....

That's a sobering thought.

Conflict - in my lifetime (I'm in my 50s) - is my real worry.  Armed conflict is not an impossibility.  And they have lots of money, resources...and guns.

66% +/- are still religious.  A clear majority (for now), and still very dangerous.

I wouldn't put it past them to do terrorist attacks, then blame the secular targets for trolling the attacks into existence.

Just the kind of 'logic' they always use.

It appears that the very religious are mostly concentrated in the southern states (no surprise there). The highest rates of poverty, crime, teen pregnancies, gun ownership, lowest rates of educational achievement, yep they're religious alright.

My own view is that a lot more non-southern state Americans are non-religious than care to admit it.

I would love to live to see the day that Christianity becomes the equivalent of Greek mythology.  Especially living in the bible belt, I could watch the transition from ground zero
