Church comes before family ...
« on: March 22, 2012, 11:02:48 AM »
A colleague of mine, who is in the US, asked if I could help him with something ... it was already 30 mins past the end of my working hours (thanks to a customer I couldn't shake off the phone) and my family was waiting for me as we had plans for that evening. I was in a hurry to leave so I kinda blew him off.

The next day I felt bad and sent him an email apologizing for being a bit short with him but I was under pressure to leave the office as my family was waiting just outside.

He responded with this:

Quote
No apology necessary. I did not take it as you being short. Family should always come before work. My priority is Church, Family, and Work in that order.

I really wasn't expecting that. What a stronghold religion has on people that they would actually put church before family and actually admit it to others proudly. Just wow ...

He places church before family because if he doesn't brainwash his children to believe in god and god's church, then god will see to it that his children will burn in hell for eternity.  So by placing church first, he's actually protecting his children from god's wrath, which a loving father should do.  God is the biggest threat in this guy's life, and he's only behaving ethically and morally.

Well, the bible does say that god comes before family.  So at least he's being consistant with what the bible said[1].  That's good....... right?   :-X
 1. at least, if you ignore that bit about hating your family
Being a Christian, I've made my decision. That decision offers no compromise; therefore, I'm closed to anything else.

hey, you can sell your family per this god, it's no problem to kill them and you are certainly encouraged to leave them for this god.

as long as you get your magic afterlife prize, screw your family.  Religion makes people such vermin, or at least gives them an excuse.

I stated in my intro (i think) that I stopped my mother from taking my daughter to a particular church function that she goes to regularly that I had previously allowed. But I told her that she could still take her to secular events as time with granny is important (at least it should be). Anyways, she hasnt gone anywhere with grandmaw since. Grandmaw spends every free moment in church... no time for grandkids when you busy being brainwashed.... that is unless you were going to subject grandkids to the brainwashing too.

Many moons ago my wife began to attend a nearby methodist church. I did not, but she went to church with my approval if that is what she wanted to do.  During one of the Sunday sermons the preacher man said that dedication to the church should come before all other things. That stuck in her craw and she asked for a private meeting.

In the meeting she asked the preacher if he really believed that the church was more important than her family. He answered a resounding YES.  She replied; "your answer has led me to a considerd conclusion; your perception of reality is royally fucked up". She never set foot in that or any other church again.  Lorraine was not inclined to use street talk unless it was appropriate. In this case she deemed that it was.  She is deceased now but she will forever remain my loyal and profoundly respected hero.

Poseidon, what a profoundly disturbing story, with a wonderful punchline.  You honor Lorraine's memory by offering us a snapshot of one moment in her life, and I think she is indeed a hero worthy of profound respect.

Plethora, I pity your colleague's family.  And, if his wife and children and parents consider the church a priority over him and his well-being, then I pity him too.

I've heard stories that make me believe some believers prefer football to church.

One pastor I know was doing his sermon at a new church when a person in a back pew took his watch off his wrist, held it in the air, and made a loud coughing sound.  The pastor found out later that that gentleman hated when preachers went over the usual time for their sermons because then that gentleman would be late getting home to watch the football games.

The pastor at my grandmother's church will shorten his sermons during football season so that his son can get home in time to watch football games.
Here read a book.  It's free.

Violence above forgiveness...that's the buybull for ya. The old testament trumps the new after all.  :P
Podeidon, my mom tossed the priest out of her house back in the 50s. She had just given birth to twins and one, my sister  Mary died shortly after so the shitbird priest instructed my parents to sleep in separate beds and to live as "brother and sister"... Moms words to the priest according to dad, Get the hell out of my house and don't you come back.
That sealed the deal with mom and dad then and there.
Knowing my mom I'd lay money on it the language got pretty peppered too.

GOD would want you to put Him first.

Of course He would want you to love your family. If your church was demanding that you put them first over your family, that is wrong. You are to put GOD first. GOD would want you to love your family and tend to its needs.

He wouldn't want you to neglect your family.

The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

Unless your family was a stumbling block for you unto the truth. This is different but in no means not to put GOD first. Always put GOD first. Whether that means by prayer and choosing to trust in Him.

Church is not the service. The Church is not the building. The Church is the body of Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ is the head of the body.

Could there be any finer example of why religion serves as such a powerful force for evil in the world?

Religion is an illness. A memetic disease.

You want us to put your god first, to love it most? Why? As far as anyone can prove, your god has done nothing for humanity.

Humans help humanity. If we don't do it ourselves, it wont get done. Because your god is either uncaring, or imaginary.
Actually it doesn't. One could conceivably be all-powerful but not exceptionally intelligent.

ILY sounds like you watched Fiddler on the Roof once to often where Tevea shuts his own daughter off for loving a gentile... "It's what GAWD expects of us!"

GOD would want you to put Him first.

"And not scorning the three delightful children who result— who are everything to me and who are my only chance of a human glimpse of a second life, let alone an immortal one, I’ll tell you something: if I was told to sacrifice them to prove my devotion to God, if I was told to do what all monotheists are told to do and admire the man who said, “Yes, I’ll gut my kid to show my love of God,” I’d say, “No, fuck you.” - Christopher Hitchens.

I don' think so but you are entitled to believe whatever you like. I've never seen Fiddler On The Roof. Nor do I think it is wrong to love a gentile or anyone for that matter. perhaps that is what's really missing, no...?

Luke 14:25-27
Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple."

You're disobeying Jesus by loving your family.  Why do you disobey Jesus so much?
Being a Christian, I've made my decision. That decision offers no compromise; therefore, I'm closed to anything else.

I wouldn't do that because GOD is not like that with me. He has always responded to me out of love. Always.

If I heard that, Based upon my relationship with GOD, I know that it would be false.
