Rick Santorum believes Obama wants to 'indoctrinate' students by encouraging higher college enrollment. The GOP hopeful sat down with Glenn Beck for a wide-ranging interview that aired Thursday, and he warned that higher education leads to secularization.

“I understand why Barack Obama wants to send every kid to college, because of their indoctrination mills, absolutely," he said. "The indoctrination that is going on at the university level is a harm to our country.”

Obama has recently doubled down on his efforts to boost college attendance, pushing to make schools more affordable and accountable.

Santorum told Beck that “62 percent of kids who go into college with a faith commitment leave without it,” but failed to say where he found that figure. He has said that parents should have control of their children's education, and vowed to home-school his seven children in the White House if he is elected president.

His wife, Karen, also talked with Beck and said that her husband entered the race because it was God's will.

"I did always feel in my heart that God had big plans for Rick," she said. "Eventually it was there, tugging at my heart. ... When Obamacare passed, that was it. That put the fire in my belly."

Yes, but He also told Herman Cain to run for president:
Quote
EASTON, Md., November 13, 2011 — On Saturday, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain revealed to a crowd at the Young Republican National Federation that God had asked him to run for president. Yes, God Him or Herself told Cain to get into the race.

“I prayed and prayed and prayed. I’m a man of faith, I had to do a lot of praying for this one, more praying than I’d ever done before in my life. And when I finally realized that it was God saying that this is what I needed to do, I was like Moses. ‘You’ve got the wrong man, Lord. Are you sure?’”

Can't we just lock these nutjobs up where they belong? This is way beyond ridiculous. I'm embarrassed to call myself an american, and if this fruitcake gets elected I'm emigrating to Canada.
If we ever travel thousands of light years to a planet inhabited by intelligent life, let's just make patterns in their crops and leave.

Maybe God wanted Cain to run, but not to win.

I mean, if he hadn’t run, most of us would have never had the opportunity to hear that moving parable about the doctor with the foreign name, who was about to operate on Cain’s colon.  I know that we were all on the edge of our seats the first time we heard the story, wondering whether the doctor was really a Muslim who left Lebanon to come to the US, go to medical school, continue his studies in order to become a surgeon, all with the intentions of sabotaging Christian’s colons during surgery.  And I know we all sighed in relief when the nurse announced that  the surgeon was really a Christian.

If Cain had not run, none of us would have had the opportunity to hear this heart warming story.

I know I never heard any stories like that in college.

I suppose the idea that evangelical fundamentalist faith simply doesn't last all that well in a typical college environment went right past Santorum.  It's like complaining because ice dissolves if you take it out of the freezer.

Santorum is right to fear people who're versed even slightly in the convention of 'critical thinking'.

It's because they highlight his failings so obviously, and ask questions like "where did you get that figure, 62%?"

Yea, that should work out well.

We don't need engineers.  All students need to be able to do is make fire, sharpen sticks, and wonder what those lights are in the sky at night.

It is amazing to think that besides all his other buffoonery he is actually trying to get elected on a platform of opposition to higher education. He is basically opposing the ambitions that almost every parent and would be parent have for their children. Every parent wants their children to have a better life than they did but that usually means getting a 1st class education. Because that's how you get the good jobs.

Of course if you hope your children get low skill, low pay, dead end jobs but are very religious then Santorum is the guy for you.

Frank:  Sadly, no it isn't amazing.  Santorum's thought process probably goes something like this:  "People who go to college tend to become less religious.  People who are less religious are less likely to vote for me.  I want more people to vote for me.  Therefore, I should argue against people going to college."  He'd probably be okay with Catholic universities, though, since apparently Satan somehow missed them even though he went after higher education first.  I mean, it doesn't matter how quality of an education it is, as long as they retain their faith, because faith is clearly oh-so-much more important than having a good education.  Because, apparently, if you have lots of faith, you can resist the efforts of Satan, should he appear in your life rather than being content to screw with institutions that you don't approve of anyway.

The thing that aggravates me is the number of people who will actually think his message has some merit.  I had a friend who believed firmly in the existence of demons, because Christian exorcisms proved those demons were really there.  Later on, he changed his mind, once he'd gotten away from the whole Christian exorcism thing (I might have had a little something to do with that, just by being his friend).

Probably not most of them, either. I doubt Santorum has much support at places like Georgetown, Boston College or Fordham, which I'm sure are way too liberal for his tastes.  He probably thinks they've been corrupted by Satan, too. Right-wing Catholics were even furious at Notre Dame for allowing Obama to speak there. Their idea of a good Catholic university would seem to be Ave Maria, the Catholic version of Bob Jones U. set up by the Domino's pizza guy...

Rick and Mel Gibson would prob hit it off.  Mel built his own Catholic Church so it could do things the old "right" way.

Santorum's thought process probably goes something like this:  "People who go to college tend to become less religious.  People who are less religious are less likely to vote for me.

Actually I suspect his thoughts are more along the lines of: "This life is temporary and doesn't matter.  I need to save as many souls as I can, and the best way for me to do that is to be in a position of power."

Its the same kind of thought process that people use when they justify cutting contraceptive aid to poor countries with overpopulation, famine, and rampant aids because the relief organizations won't teach 'abstinence only' methods.  The idea that somehow it's ok to die an agonizing death because it means a chance to get to 'heaven' rather than preventing the birth in the first place.

Santorum resonates with people because, in my opinion he honestly believes the things he's saying.  Despite the craziness of it, he lacks the calculated pandering cynicism that the others in his party have.

He wants us to set our sights lower.  To a point, it's ok for kids to not go to college, most don't.
There are problems though.  Firstly, he's a fucking misogynist.  He apparently thinks the proper place for women is in the kitchen and having babies.

Ahem, sorry.  I digress.

The problem is that from an economic standpoint, he represents poverty for the people who choose manual labor as a career.

I like to use my grandmother as an example: She was a waitress.  She worked damm hard, long hours.  But in doing so she was eventually able to save up enough money to buy a house on her own.  Eventually she re-married and with her husband got a second home.  That kind of future doesn't exist any longer.  The middle class, does not exist any longer.

It's slowly dying out.  The only reason we haven't really noticed it is because the living standard in the US is better, even for the poor the much of the world.

Gone is the nuclear family with one parent who stays at home, two cars in the driveway and a vacation out of state a couple times a year.  Gone are the days when working harder, longer hours was a way to get a home or a car.

Mr. Santorum may pine for the time when those things were possible, but he has flatly ignored the reason that they're gone.  That reason, is not religion, it's income disparity.

But women can't do as much as a man.  For instance, sure a woman can fly a plane, but only a small plane.  It takes a real man to muscle a 747 around.  Don't try to dispute this.  I have it on good authority:
Washington Post -- EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Rick Santorum
Quote
He acknowledges that women are presently in combat positions in the Air Force and Navy. “But I don’t think you see the same problems [that servicemen] would find on the front line.” He says, “It’s not a matter of putting women in dangerous roles.” He tell me, for example, that women are fully capable of “flying small planes.”

Whoosh - there go a few votes!   There's got to be some hard core republican women out there who feel they can fly ANY plane!

I still love it that Ricky stole his wife away from the boyfriend she had been living with for several years. Who was a big-time abortion doctor. Who delivered her when she was born.

That's probably why he's against gays in the military. Fewer women get raped that way and how are they going to know their place if they aren't properly victimized.

His campaign slogan, Education, education, it'll ruin the nation.
Of course he's pandering to the millions of poor, uneducated people who either can't afford college or wouldn't go even if someone paid them $50,000 a year to sit in a classroom and behave for a few hours a day.
