the invisible sopa box and should wwgha observe a silence?
« on: January 18, 2012, 04:46:50 AM »
SOPA protests and sites voluntarily go down around the web tomorrow
eg. Reddit goes down for 12 hours in ~3 hours time (at time of posting)

6.1 What exactly is Wikipedia doing?
6.2 Why is this happening?
6.3 Isn't SOPA dead? Wasn't the bill shelved and didn't the White House declare that it won't sign anything that resembles the current bill?
6.4 Aren’t SOPA/PIPA as they stand not even really a threat to Wikipedia? Won't the DNS provisions be removed?
6.5 What about OPEN?
6.6 Why is the Wikipedia mobile site still available?
6.7 Did the Italian Wikipedia’s protest action last year achieve its goal of stopping the Italian law in question?
6.8 Do you think U.S. users will respond to this action?
6.9 What is the significance of acting in concert with other major sites? Will this really produce a politically effective message beyond acting in isolation

Just wondering what the forum denizens here are thinking?

my only stance left after the grass roots options like "get up" and "access" have been pursued to the fullest is to spectate in silent appreciation and moral support

I am aware  (especially after the last site crash) that no-one here has site rights or real power so I can hardly expect wwgha to blackout in support, but I am interested in hearing your thoughts.

sent emails to my senators.  http://www.senate.gov/

I can see a purpose for the big sites to go dark, e.g. reddit, wikipedia, etc.  But each and every forum and website?  I don't see that it makes much difference.

Every little bit helps, I suppose.

You can also use this online service to send free faxes to your Congresspeople: www.faxzero.com.  I've heard that they pay more attention to faxes than to emails (and even more so to phone calls).

We are ahead of the curve.  We had our blackout for about a week not too long ago.

Not that it would happen, but I think if a large percentage of sites shut down, as well as the giants, the public outcry would have more apparent voice.
+1 for the effort and the link mate.

well, it seems that thanks to the protesting, a lot of bill sponsors are attempting to wash their hands of the SOPA and PIPA bills.  They of course are "shocked, shocked" that the bills are what they are.   By their own words, they are either too STUPID to read the bills or they are simply liars.  Quite a choice for our legislators.

Because the SOPA silence is been and gone, I've started a new thread regarding SOPA   here
(damn! I have completely forgotten how to embed a url into a pretty blue word so here is the linky below) ;)
