Yahweh is like an abusive husband

My wife was talking about one of her friends who is in an abusive relationship, and I got to thinking. Yahweh is like an abusive husband, and his believers are the battered spouses.

He treats his believers poorly, abusing them both physically and mentally. Then he tells them:
  • they will never find another god as loving as he is,
  • they are dependent on him for everything they have,
  • they will be sorry if they leave him,
  • in the end, they will see that he is right.
Then the believers say:
  • they shouldn't doubt him or his plan because he provides for them,
  • they are afraid he will kill them,
  • but he loves me! and i can feel his love!
And somehow the masses eat it up every Sunday - on their day off - dressed in their finest clothes - and paying to hear his excuses and lies! And then they are guilted into going back on Wednesday for more brainwashing!

Its an analogy I've used many times before.

IF you do everything Yahweh says, EXACTLY how and when he wants it, then he is sweetness and light and will reward you.....at some unspecified point in the future.

But if you cross him....if you don't jump when he says frog....if you do anything to displease him....then he will - quite literally - make your life hell.

If someone acted like that in any other field of existence, we would all be horrified and denounce them as a monster.  And yet in our crazy world he is held up as the pinnacle of goodness and love.

Yes, he is. He's just like an abusive husband or father. I've also used the analogy several times.

Yes, and all this is done behind a veil of mystery and hidenness and silence by the abusive husband with only an old threatening "note" for his victims to try and go by.

Also, If a god exists, then its the worst offender possible that has ever been known with regards to chronic neglect shown towards its "spouses".
