When my mom and dad were young, they would have "themed" dates. An Italian movie, Italian food. French movie, French food. As the years went by, my sweet father always loved to watch movies that were associated with some sort of theme.
As a kid growing up in a secular household, this movie was part of our spring break tradition. In later years, The Last Temptation of Christ would also become part of the tradition. But the Jesus Christ Superstar of my youth was always my favorite.
It is a product of its era - the moment in which the hippies gave way to disco - but I watched it again this evening, and on many levels, it is amazingly fresh.
It presents a very interesting interpretation of the scriptures, one which is certainly not in current fashion. But it contains a significant body of quotes taken from the English translation of the NT. And I like the music.
If you've never seen it before, push through and give it a chance. If you haven't seen it in years or decades, you might find yourself enjoying it.
